hey i am a little nervous about quitting cigaretts. it sounds retarded, but i just dont want to go through withdrawls and have to miss work. i have been smoking for 2 years.. i am 21. i am nervous about the withdrawls because i have 9 months clean off of oxycontin (about 160mg a day for 2 years). so yeah if anyone has any advice i would really appreciate it. i have tried the gum but its kinda lame. so how hard is cold turkey? and i am thinking of just getting an electronic cig until i can get back into the habit of working out. than maybe i can quit. thanks in advance to anyone who replies.

The key is a few things;

1. You really only need to make it ten days without having a cigarette to get over the worst cravings.

2. Choose an easier goal first, like quit buying cigs. When I quit this was a huge step. I found that while it was still a difficult habit to break, it was much less awful then trying to quit smoking outright. (also you tend to have fewer to smoke this way!)

I was also addicted to Speed and to Coke many years ago, and quiting cigs was more difficult than quiting the dope.

That's retarded. It's best if cigs are your only addiction to quit everything and get some fucking legos or something, start writing a book, some type of little thing to keep you focused, even if it's stupid. That, and remembering that after the third day, each subsequent day will be easier. All you gotta do is make it three days, and then everything gets easier after that third day. I've quit for a few months at a time, but I pick it back up because I have a lot of down time. A lot of just looking at fucking forums and shit.

Get by the first two weeks and it gets much easier. I know the gum is shitty but bite it in half (4mg piece=2mg nic) If that's still too much bite the half in half and put in your cheek, just chewing occasionally. The habit is two fold. You're addicted to nicotine and the smoking is just a habit. Get the nicotine level satisfied then just keep busy. If the gum is that bad for you they have the patches and I even tried the nazal spray (don't know if that's still around). Oh yeah, there is also some script pills you can take that work but you'll have to see a doc to get those. One guy on this site used Chantex but I never heard if he made "clean" or not. Good luck, you can do it! Think of all the money you'll save and your car and house won't stink anymore! And your health, etc......

And I finally quit in 2000. I probably quit 3-4 times before that for a few years here and there. Now I'm 60 and will never ever even take one hit of a cig or cigar. I'm an addict and can never "dabble". That's where many people make a huge mistake.

Chantix supposedly killed people.

learn to HATE them before you try to quit , then when you are sure you really hate the quitting will come all by its self.i smoked for 15 years and quit cold turkey while looking at my last half a pack . when i was for sure , i stomped all over the last of them and in the garbage they went.

I can second that, quitting smoking meth was easier than quitting smoking cigarettes. Don't let that intimidate you, though :mrgreen:

I actually started by smoking only a few cigarettes a day, and tried to work my way down to zero...then through out the first year, and even the second year, I'd get a really bad craving, so I'd just smoke one, and then stop after that. The key was to bum a cigarette off someone, never go buy a pack. That was my strategy, but I don't know how well it would work for other people. I don't really know anyone else that quit like this.

It took me like 4 or 5 attempts at quitting before I actually quit.

You can feel your health improve almost immediately, though. It's well worth it.

Ah, but you feel like total shit for the first few weeks, your lungs expel all the shit it built up to protect themselves from the cigarette smoke. After that, you'll run a mile, etc.

If you really wanna quit, quit buying cigarettes and buy 'Little cigars' Santa Fe is a common brand, Cheyenne, just the cheapest shit. You'll start breathing easier and get a taste of what it's like to quit. The little cigars are nasty and harsh, and you'll do anything to quit.

i took chantix and quit after 20+ years. it's been just over a year now and i haven't smoked a cigarette. i'm often around them and i still have some here. i have NO desire to touch them. they make my lungs hurt. i found this out after being in the hospital for 5 days last year. i came home and smoked and it hurt. got on chantix shortly after that. i went from well over a pack a day to 0, overnight. never looked back.

quitings hard dude, ive done it a couple times after smoking for 7 years and always feel like shit! One of these days ill do it for real. I think the trick is you need to do something in replacement of smoking, like you said working out would be perfect to replace a negative habit with a positive. If you just try to smoke bud all day it probably wont work if your really addicted like i am :(
