how far to keep my 600 watt from the top of my plants?

from what i've read 18" seems to be the rule but my question is;

is this because of heat? or is there another reason the plants don't like to be that close to the bulb?

im running a batwing open hood unfortunately right now on my 600 mh. plants are average 10" after 5 weeks since seed. im keeping the light 18" away, but im worried about heat.

im constantly seeing yellowing (and in some cases dying) leaves down at the bottom of the plant. the canopy is a nice green, but always losing the battle to yellowing on the lower leaves. i suspect this isn't a heat issue, but can't hurt to ask.

my journal is up to date if you want to see pics in my signature.

ph is at 6.5. using pro mix with perlite.

increase your nutrient solution for vegging. your lower leaves are nitrogen deprived - and this is normal. your height of 18 inches should be fine. if you had heat issues it would be apparent at the canopy level.

thing is i tried feeding them once at 1/2 strength and they showed nute burn at the tips of the leaves.....this was over a week ago, and even the new sets of leaves show a tiny bit of burn

what vendor nutrient solution are u using? - and what strain? if it's bagseed it shouldnt as be sensitive to nutrient.

I'm not sure ur seeing nute burn either.. you should post some pics at this point or everything is pure speculation. g/l.

Yea it looks like you are missing some KEY elements here.

First. you need to go back to the hydro store and get the B.C. Boost Micro nutrient to use with the Grow. your only using 1 part of a 2 or 3 part solution. I highly reccomend you purchase the whole recipe for success kit made by technoflora. as this will introduce you to their whole product line, and you will get way better results. right now your plants arent getting any nutrients to say the least.

Your also growing in peat and perlite, which contain no way of retaining nutrients. your going to have to drip feed or something because the nutrient will only be absorbed by the plant while it is diluted in the water, flowing over the roots.

I would take a guess that your plants are now starving.. you need to start by getting some B.C. Boost so your plants can start using the nutrients that are available when u water.

Edit: maybe pro mix is a soil.. hopefully you went heavy on the soil instead of peat or perlite. I know about this beacuse i did the same thing - i could have had better production if i had more nutrient retention in the soil. and i also use the technofolora line.

yeah, thank you. the mix is supposed to be a complete formula. but made of peat and perlite. i know i need the boost, but money has been tight, so i was putting it off, plus since i added the grow and got a little burn, i figured the plants could do without.

thanks alot. i also suspected i was missing something, and boost could definately be it. i do have the "bloom" for flowering. i don't know why the hydro store didn't show me boost in the first place. oh well. lesson learned.

I can put my 1000W MH with batwing at over a meter away and I still dont notice any stretch but when I move it close to the canopy I notice a dramatic increase in growth rate likely due to more lumens, I think minium is about 9 or 10 inches - If you put your hand up to it you should not feel the heat at the canopy level from the light...I keep mine about 12 inches now and it seems to be perfect but ofcourse the lower you go the less plants you will cover but at the same time you get more lumens to the plants...there is also a minimum range that will burn the plants regardless of any heat sensation I think at like 7 inches you will be damaging the plants but not burning them...

that is a nice ass!

you can drop it in as close as you want... just keep an eye on your temp and plant leaves... too much light can bleach chlorophyll right out of leaves and stunt growth...
