I think putting your hand at the plants canopy (height) and if the light is hot then raise the lights.

are they actualy 100w cfls or 100w aquivalent cfls, like 23 watters.
i have 23 watters in my veg box and they are within a couple of inches of the plants.

man i keep my within a inch on 24/7 and never had aproblem and i have 8 of them 6500k shouldnt bother them at all long as your temps are not above the 88 mark then they start to get a little to toasty for them raise them about 2 to 3 inches if so good luck

If the lights are higher the plant will stretch to the light. Possible making it top heavy and fall over.

get them closer if your temps are steady in the 80s and you have air circulating in there then it will keep the bulbs cool whats your light schudule and what kelvin are you using the one above me answered the slow growth? they will just stretch and you dont want that at a early stage cause they will do plenty of that in the flowering stage keep me updated would like to see a picture of your setup
