My 2 cents about these whole situations is this.
Let the police do their jobs and find out what happened from their own detective work.
I know I would never involve myself in any sort of organized crime because I realize that I don't want to do the time, and I also never want to rat on my friends.
There's nothing wrong with regular average joe's calling police after seeing a crime.....whatever, they're just worried about peoples safety etc.
The rat in your case though, already had legal troubles himself and decided to rat. IMO, He deserves a good visit from your people for sure, as he's been dealt with by the law himself and should know better.
