How Do You Celebrate Christmas?

Oh boy, it's hot... has been for the last few days. And I mean really hot... 34, 35 degrees celcius (around 95 farenheit). Summer's finally arrived with a vengeance. :cuss:

So, I was sitting here, thinking about how hot it is, and I suddenly realised how close it is to christmas! You see, in Australia christmas is synonymous with heat. It's the middle of summer so it's always hot. Temperatures in the high 30's to low 40's (95 - 110 f) are the norm. And where we're from it's the middle of the 'wet season', so Christmas day is rainy as often as not. This means that the air is both hot and wet, which can make for some sticky situations. As a result, blow-up swimming pools, beach toys and hose-games are extremely popular christmas presents for our kids. The sounds of splashing, giggles and squeals of delight are also one of the things I associate with christmas (along with the taste and smell of watermelon and a game called 'Sticks' that we always used to play with our cousins when I was a kid). Air conditioners work overtime and the sales figures for prawns, beer and bagged ice go through the roof.

As the day wears on, the smell of barbecued food takes over the air as fathers everywhere are put to work in the back yard. Traditionally, the BBQ is the man's domain, with the women taking care of the salads and (let's face it) everything else. Extended families usually take it in turns to host a get-together and anyone interested is welcome to come along and help celebrate. Every large receptacle is commandeered and filled with ice to keep the beer and soft-drinks cold. The kids (and some of the adults) usually start up a game of back-yard cricket (or beach cricket, depending upon where you are) sometime in the afternoon. This is about the time when most of the adults take the chance to go inside for a bit of a nap to help digest the (probably too much) food (and beer) that they've consumed.

Not many Aussies do the traditional roast meal for christmas dinner. It's just too hot to spend all day in the kitchen. In our house, the rule is that Mum does not work on Christmas day. I will prepare roasts for cold meats and containers of salads in the days leading up to Chrissy, but I do not cook on Christmas! I do manage to drink, though.

Oh, that reminds me... F*&# it's hot!! I wish I had a beer in the fridge...

Anyway, all this thinking about Christmas has got me wondering how everyone else on RIU will be celebrating this silly season in their own little corners of the world. So tell me, do you guys have certain customs or family traditions that you follow at christmas time? Does your family have a favourite chrissy holiday destination? Do you celebrate in a strange... er... different way than the rest of us? Do you have one of those embarrassing uncles that always seems to end up getting really drunk? Or do you want to hide as far away from the rest of the population as possible until the whole shemozzle is finished and gone? :bigjoint:

What will you be doing?

Christmas used to be a big thing when our kids were little. But now most of them are grown up and we either have to share them with other people, or we just don't see them at all. It's a lot more relaxed these days.

When my Pops was still alive we had a great tradition.

Christmas Eve about 1000 we'd get together and have a few drinks or whatever, then we ate at midnight. Always the same meal, carp with potatoes and vegetables, a cobbler for desert (sometimes apple, maybe boysenberry, whatever). On the table was a place setting for those that had passed on and some Holy wafer and of course the almighty money. After dinner we hit the tree and opened presents, and stayed up till whenever.

Thanks for the memory

Merry Christmas to all of you out there in Australia. This yank likes you guys....:joint:Aussie Rules Football is bad ass .....

It's beginning to look a lot like christmas...

This is pretty much what we can expect until then. These thunderclouds formed early this afternoon... then blew away to a completely clear sky... all within a couple of hours. There's more forming now though, but that's a fairly normal weather pattern for this time of year. Clear mornings... hot days... thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening... warm nights...

Aaah, christmas. :eyesmoke:

Man, Christmas with my family is always the same. All the kids wind up coming back to Mom's and spending the night uncomfortably crowded in one or two bedrooms. We wind up staying up until midnight filling stockings and laughing downstairs while anyone under the age of twelve goes to bed at 9. Then, we all get up again at seven and go downstairs, start a fire in the fireplace, and tear into our stockings. They're usually munchies to make up for the lack of breakfast.

Once Dad gets downstairs, we make a plate of shrimp cocktails and pass 'em around. I guess it's just a weird family tradition, but I don't consider it Christmas without shrimp cocktails. We spend a while going one-by-one through gifts before turning on some Christmas music and talking. We've never done a big Christmas dinner, just munchies. After we clean up ridiculous piles of wrapping paper, we just hang out. Usually, we wind up breaking in a new video game or two.

What a lovely tradition. We on the other hand usually have a big christmas eve dinner, then the kids go to bed early so the adults can do all the christmassy stuff. Of course they get up early too, so we have to accept the early morning wake up call. They spend a half an hour or so ripping into their pressies, then we barely see them all day. That's ok though, by then we usually need the quiet. :bigjoint:

You're welcome.

Gryph will love you, he's the aussie rules fan. I hate football!

well i generally get up about 9am and have a bowl, then i take a shower and get dressed and what not. Before i leave i smoke another bowl and go to my parents house and open presents and have an awesome breakfast. Me and my sister usually leave about 2 and go smoke a few bowls, i usually give her some weed and she usually gives me some weed so thats always a good gift. About 6 we go back over and have christmas dinner and hang out till about 8 or 9 and then i either go home and smoke some more or sometimes my sister has some people drinking at her place and ill go over their and get trashed. Christmas is always good.
