How can I power this fan?

I have a fan that I used to use in my car when I didnt have a/c. It plugs into a cig lighter and calls for 12v 2.5 amp for high and a little less for low speed. Well I stripped the wires and added a 12v 3 amp power supply and all it does is turn on and off rapidly. I then bought a 12v 1.67 amp power supply and it does the same thing.

Why isnt this working? Thanks!!

Its a small, high powered inline fan and would work great to vent my tent out. I have 5 other fans so its not like Im just being cheap. People wire up fans on here all the time.

the reason it was turning on and off is because its a 12v dc fan. or direct current which your car battery supplies thru your cig lighter. your house plug is ac or alternating current. look for a 12v dc adapter or wire up a old pc power supply that will give you the 12v dc you need to run the fan.
