House Bill 1983 is currently in committee in our House of Representatives. House bill 1983 will do two things, first it will change marijuana from a schedule 1 drug to a schedule 3 drug. It will also give the states the right to decide if they're going to allow medical marijuana or not. It is currently being discussed in the 53 member House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

If your congress person sits on the committee(The 53 members of the committee.), please take 15 minutes out of your day and write them a letter. There are over 1.5million medical marijuana users in this country, it's time we are heard. We're a pretty decent size chunk of voters.

It sucks they will not pass this bill, I haven't researched it much but if it is what it seems to be they will not pass it.

This bill is 2 years old and as far as i can tell dead in the water for well over a year.
It's nice to see your first post here is a one liner with misinformation. Welcome to RIU!

This is a new bill, it was introduced May 25, 2011 by Barney Frank a Democrat from Mass. I have a feeling the recent findings of the National Cancer Institute (they recently admitted THC has tumor shrinking abilities) is one of the main reasons behind this bill. It's pretty hard to keep marijuana a schd 1 drug when your own institutes are saying it does in fact have medicinal value.

The bill just went into committee. Now it is true 99% of bills die in committee, but we cant let this happen. This bill effects everyone of us! Doesn't matter if your legal or not, if you live in the states you are effected. With marijuana no longer being a schedule 1 drug hopefully we'll see an end to recreational smokers in jail.

This is an active bill and it is important it passes. Lets take a step forward together, not 3 steps back. As I said before, the medical community is over 1.5 million strong. We are a large chunk of voters and it's time our voice is heard.

Seriously take 15 minutes out of your day and write your congress person a brief letter. They do read them, well their employees do but either way they get read. One letter may not make a difference, but 1.5 million will. If we don't speak up, we are going to get stepped on.

Emailed and snail mailed my US Rep. he seats on the committe.

If we can do this, then we can make even more changes in the future. If nothing else this has given me hope.

can't complain about things if you don't do anything to change the way it is. hopefully everybody that reads this sends two letters just so they get 3 million

That's exactly right. Don't just sit on your ass getting stoned and talk about how people shouldn't being going to jail for marijuana. Spend 10-15 minutes of your day and do a little something to help move toward change.

I sent letters via snail mail to several of the committee members. I think I may send a brief letter to all 53 committee members. Don't know if out of state congress members will even bother reading a letter from out of state.

Bad news. Just got a reply from my Representative and he is not supporting this bill. Too bad he is part of the committee.

Now I'll work for anyone running against him when his re-election comes round.
