Horizontal buds!

Hi All,

First grow. I'm about 50 days into flowering and my buds on one of my plants have gone horizontal on me..

Just curious if it was because I didn't have a fan blowing on the stem to encourage a stronger stem? It seems all of them are flopping over at this point. Of my other 3 plants none are doing this yet.

This plant does have the largest buds but I don't kid myself into thinking that I'm growing massive nugs or anything as this is my first grow.

Just wondering what I can do to avoid this in the future.. I have them staked as best I can with what I have and tied back so that they continue to get optimal light

this happens with some strains, i have the flav at the moment some of the colas are now starting to flop over
the tall branches are too thin to handle the weight of the cola
this is a good sign of nice heavy colas, it would be better if the branches could support themselves but thats just how some strains grow

just tie them to something for support, if they are in soil you can use wood etc

blowing air will not help at this stage and that is kind of overrated
you can also bend them back and forth when they are young to create a thicker steam, but that will not help them at 50 days of flower
you dont have a problem , unless you see heavy buds as a problem :)

Can just be genetic. All of my more sativas last round would have been touching the floor had I not braced them/tied them up late in flower. I hear silica helps stiffen stems but as long as you don't mind throwing supports in I don't see the problem with floppy plants late in flower.

Totally agree with skunk on this one!! Put some stakes into your pot, right up alongside the branches that are falling over. Twist-tie them into place and they'll be good to go until the end of flower! I have this problem with every strain I have ever grown, actually. Inevitably, the plant just starts to strain under its own weight. It's a good problem to have, actually. And fortunately, one that can be remedied for a few dollars at a local grow shop! Stakes come in bamboo, or green plastic. Both work well! Happy growing!

prop it up with some sticks, she'll be fine. pot plants can bend all over the place and survive. you can even snap the stem and it will mend itself

I used to lay mine down, and buds would grow from the buds, making a sled looking gigantor. Gotta do what you gotta do when you're indoors with 3' cola's...

I do have some stakes of shit I found around the house.. I should make an effort to find some larger stakes and support them better...

although the entire stem is getting lots of light if I distribute it around... (albeit on one side)

Despite the fact that it has "the bends" it's still my favourite plant of the 4 I'm growing... (other than another pheno expression that is shooting pistils all over the place)

yeah man! if i had a plant thats buds were too heavy im sure it would be my fav too! lol keep up d good work!

Yo, Ottawa, saw that rep bump this morning. Many thanks, sir. I'm very happy to be of help. I learned almost everything I know about growing from forums like this and the kindness of more experienced growers, so I'm very happy and humbled to finally be able to return the favor to the grow community!!

Also, Radiohead might be the greatest band of our time, so props for posting that as well! You should've seen how fast their tickets sold out here in Colorado... Ridiculous.

I try and get my stakes in b4 the Buds are formed completely that way the plants are tricked into thinking there is no weight on the stem!But ya stake them big boys off.Also stake your other plants too.Looking good tho!

Sounds like I'll have to invest in some decent stakes.. I've also seen people on here using pvc piping in their grows here on RIU and was too embarassed to ask what it was for .. is that what they were using it for?

silica in my experience can mess with ph probably not for the beginner, use as foliar if necessary.

real problem you have there, buds are too heavy, what a shame lol. as mentioned stake them, tie them, rotate them so that they can get the most light possible. you should have a fan though it will help immensely. plants grow towards the light so its not unusual for a branch to tip and formations growing in different directions towards the light, check out vertical growing to see what i mean.
