Honey Oil

Disclaimer - I'm not real sure if this is the forum I should be posting my question to. I looked around and nothing really fit the bill. But if I should move this thread somewhere else, someone please let me know.


Okay - So the only tech I have been able to come across for making honey oil is by using hexane, and I aren't able to get any hexane. I heard it is controlled now since it is used in meth labs now. But whatever the reason is, I cant' get a hold of any hexane. Someone in the hexane thread said they got the same results using Coleman fuel (Naptha), but I've tried it, and can't get anything to filter out. So I don't know how that guy was able to do it in the absence of hexane.

So I am going to try this by distillation. I plan on doing a solvent extraction as usual, and then distilling off the solvent. In order to do this right though, I need to at least have the temp of the boiling solvent up to about 315F+. That will presumably get the oil to carry over with the solvent. I am going to be doing this outside (no better ventilation right?). For safety, I'm going to have the thing in a large plexiglass container with an opening at the top for fresh air(oxygen for my flame source), and a fan hooked up to some duct work to suck out any vapors that may collect in the thing. I'm going to those efforts because I am worried about the thing exploding at the higher temps I need.

(If anyone sees any flaws in my planned safety regiment, then please feel free to comment).

This leads to my big question though. A simple heating element is not enough to get the temps as high as I need them. So I need to buy something better like a Bunsen burner. I don't really know what to buy though. If I buy a Bunsen burner, then what do I do about the gas? Do I hook the thing up to a container of propane or something? I don't want to go into the science store with my hands shoved into my pocket, and sort of stuttering out what I need. I want to be able to go in and ask for what I need, and then leave with no questions asked.

So does anyone have any ideas about the best way to go about getting my solvent heated up to 315F+? Thanks.

nope, you are playing with some dangerous ingredients my friend.
I've used Naptha with very good results except that it has a rust inhibitor in it that gets transferred into the oil.
I just dumped the shake into a jar of naptha shookit up for a minute or so then strained it out through a coffee filter and let the liquid air dry in the sun on a a plate. I scraped it off after with a razor blade and mixed it with seived hash and made a chunk off "hash" with it.
I prefer to make canna butter with trim now-a-days.
Sorry to here Hexane is no longer available. I heard you could buy it at a paint store as it is a slovent. That was years ago though.
 
I did notice in your post that you failed to mention what kind of solvent you planned on using. Without knowing which solvent you plan on using your 315F is of no use. First pick which solvent you plan on using. Next get the complete MSD sheet on that solvent. The MSD information is on the container somewhere (must be labeled by law). Next find what the boiling and flash point are for the solvent. Hopefully it will be in the 700F+ area. The butane torch could be an extremely BAD choice. Butane will burn around 2000F so unless the flash point of the solvent is much higher then 2000F, you are going to kill yourself. When you boil a liquid, it is being converted into a gas. Solvents in liquid form burn. Solvents in a gas form explode. See where I am headed......... If I dare make a suggestion I would use an electric heat plate that is certified to be used around explosive gases and one that has adjustable temperature. Any electric equipment used (fans, lighting, extension coreds, etc) should also be certified to operate in low flash point situations. If you do not have experience with this type of situation DO NOT DO IT.

If you are just looking to make some hash just buy some of the hash bags and use the ice and water technique. It is a great but time consuming method but, you would have to be really stoned to kill yourself using ice and water method. Hope this was helpful and good luck to you!

Yeah, I can make oil easy with Naptha...and its potent also. I like to drizzle some of it onto a bowl and smoke it that way. Ive just had this bug up my arse to make honey oil with that pure, golden color and have tried just about everything. I've filtered and reflitered using different solvents at different temps etc. ad nauseum ad infinitum.....and with no success.

So I've gotta think real hard about quitting in this effort, or taking the step with the distillation effort. I'm worried about safety though, so I need to think it through reeeaaalllllly carefully if I decide to go forward.

The good thing about pot is that it is safe, you wont die, od, suffer any addiction withdrawl or harm you... mixing these chemicals doesn't sound like its safe anymore. Use distilled drinkable alcohol 190proof if you can get it. :) works jsut as well and wont risk your lfie like anthing used in paint would.
