Hlg 550s in 5x5

Has anybody ran 2 hlg 550s or the likes in a 5x5.
If so how did they do. My buddy is wanting to setup one and knows a guy with a few cheap 550s. To me it would seem like the sides would be lacking Par unless put on a light rail up or add a bar light down one side but that ups the watts used and kind of expensive to run. Thanks in advance.

Makes sense that he would be far better off using those two lights in a 4x8 instead of a 5x5.

Even with light rails you'd be way off uniform light distribution in a 5x5.

If 5x5 is the only option then one hlg550 plus some light bars on the outside would be better.

Guess it depends on how cheap your mate is getting those two 550s

Agreed a 4x8 would be a much better choice, but if you’ve got a couple of spare light movers you could have one covering each half of the tent starting at opposite sides, I’d be tempted to have them pretty high up too. But still.. for the price of light mover vs 4x8 tent I reckon you’d get more returns from a more appropriate tent

Agreed. He’s got the tent already and I have an extra mover. I was thinking of making a long bar to put both lights on. Like bolt them to the rail so there up high. Looking at there par chart there good for 3sq ft best. I use a 4.0 rail in a 3x5 with a 480 4 bar that’s 27x 44 and kill it with that small setup. He’s wanting to do similar. I’ve just never heard of anyone doing it with 2
He can get them for 125 each so kinda hard to pass up and try to make it work. I’m going to build him a 2 site Rdwc and don’t know how they are on heat since he don’t have a chiller yet. Good thing is it’s getting cooler in southern Ill. So may be alright till he gets the rest of what he needs. Thanks guys for the input!

Thats an absolute steal. where you finding deals like this lol?

2 550's in a '5x5 would be a damn good setup IMO. Reflective tent walls and training your plants to stay squat and uniform (LST, SCROG) will help. You can also get away with the lights being a bit closer that way too. I rarely have my lights set at the manufacturer recommended distance, my par meter and plants stress level (or lack of) dictate that.

With a bit of mcguyvering he could probably use both lights to make one and get far better coverage.
Essentially it's 4 boards on a plate heatsink right.
Dissemble and redesign.
the aluminium sheet costs nothing.

2 drivers , 8 boards .
Just need some wire and more aluminium sheet .
Could be a beast

Some guy he knows got in some trouble and needs cash so one of those deals. I used 3 320s in a 5ft and it did pretty nice but they're longer plus 1 more board. I’m sure it will work out tho.

Yea I didn’t even think of that! Goood idea! Move them around and get even par and make an aluminum angle tray to set them in so they can be on hangers. Good lookin out. Thanks. Drop ceiling of quantum boards lol.

If you removed the boards for rewiring could use a wafer wheel and cut the aluminum backing so the boards are singles. 8 boards spread out would kill it in a 5×5.

Or get one more single board and add to even it out.

I went over with him and wound up buying what he had left. I got 4 lights a few fans and big dehumidifier. He got the other 2. I’m going to take lights of his and put my metal blade in table saw and cut them evenly. Drill 4 holes in each for hangers so I can place and get best par in there. Glad I have a good par meter! I’ll post pics and results when I get going with it. Thanks guys for all the input.

Some boy! Yes deffo post pics, can’t wait to see this.

I thought you could hang them like a 3x3 square with one missing out the middle, kind of like the ac infinity design with a hole in the Center

I know this is an older thread but wanted to say, in a 5x5, eith a pair of 300L or a pair if 350R would be a better setup of a good spread.
In a 4x8 or a 5x10 a pair of 650R would be optimal.
Light movers are great in veg, not so much in flower.
