history of growing.

ive read pot has been in use for thousands of years(or was it tens of thousands). within the last 3 decade( total guess) grow nuts in bottles have appeared for bud. but back when they didnt have all this when they grew in the ground, what were some of the things that could have been used or proved to have been used in medieval pot growing, or stone age pot head(no pun intended)
