Yippies and Hippies were revolutionary... At least the ones we remember. Many hippies were just trying to party and be "hip", while others were leading the heard towards revolution, especially in the non-white communities. There were world renowned psychologists teaching these people things like "Religion without psychedelics is like Astronomy without a telescope", and they were learning about philosophy and life, living in Kairos time. As many of them grew older they decided "we were just trying to get high and get girls", and that's because those specific people WERE doing that. But many people were actually part of a real revolution, especially many of the Yippies, if there had been more Yippies, the revolution would have gone a lot differently.
Some how the children of these people became the "hippies" that wear collared shirts, drive Priuses, and have Starbucks stickers on their laptops. Just because you drive a Prius and donate to the sad dog foundation, doesn't make you a revolutionary... But Yuppies seem to think it does, and I have no idea why, but people consider them eco-friendly and "hippy". They use and throw away more cardboard, plastic and Styrofoam than anyone else on the planet buying useless shit from Skymall.
Hipsters... I don't know what they think they are, but they are basically the new, less meaningful Yippies. It's just a trend, and when they are all 40-50 they are going to be terrible parents, wine-o's and guys with beer belly's saying "we were just trying to have fun and get girls." When there actually are people in the "hipster movement" that think they are actually doing something. But what they are "doing" is so vague and faux-political that it's not going to do anything except maybe call up a great leader that can actually DO something with the movement. Or maybe the movement will just stay vague and there will be an event 100x bigger than and 1,000x less meaningful than WoodStock.
