HID Light Near a Furnance

Hey guys I am reading the documentation on a 400W hid light.

It says "The ballast can't be installed and operated under circumstances with explosive/volatile gas; it can't be started near flammable gas or liquid."

I have my current CFL grow spot near my house's furnace. (roughly 4.5 ft away)

So is this a no go? Or would it only be a problem with a gas leak?

I could move it to a different spot in the same room which would be about 11 feet away.

Thought and comments?

its not the light you need to worry about near the furnace, its the ballast. the further the better imo. any sparks from the ballast with a gas leak and you are all finished matey. its safer to keep it in another room if possible. if not get it inside a seperate enclosure

It's the gas leak you need to worry about, even a wall light switch can cause the leaked gas to explode.

Balasts not the issue, Uf you ahve a gas leak that will be set off by theballast it will be set off by anything with a spark. Light switch, alarm clock, saw, drill etc. Anything with a motor or uses electricity & has a switch will set it off. Dont worry about the placement of the ballast to the furnace. Youre safe.

your furnace has a motor. It has micro sparks everytime it come one. As mentioned, the ballast is not an issue.

Have fun & grow outside if your truly concerned.

Good luck!

metal halide lamps and metal halide ballasts are safe in a gas leak, the ballast does not have an ignitor, and why is that you may ask, because the ignitor is inside the glass lamp.
you can hear them click like hell when the bulb is kaput.

an hps/metal halide combined magnetic ballast is a sealed unit, the ignitor is in the ballst to ignite the lamp, but........ these things are sealed units.

if your furnace developed a gas leak you would know about it by smell before any ballast caused an explosion, although any contacting timer you use will blow your house off the planet when it sparks during switch on.

so it does not matter if you use a cfl, an led, or an hid, your lamp (or fan) timer will ignite leaked gas.

and that goes for every single person on here, not just you.

>>>>>>>>>> BOOOOOOOOOOOOOM <<<<<<<<<<<

reminds me of a song i used to sing when i was a kid.

(to the tune of 10 green bottles)

10 sticks of dynamite hanging on the wall,
10 sticks of dynamite hanging on the wall,
and if one stick of dynamite should accidently fall,
there`ll be no sticks of dynamite and no fucking wall.
