So I have learned the hard way about hermaphrodites. Does the calyx serve a function on our girls that we care about or is it safer to remove any calyx in the off chance a certain strain/clone is hermaphrodite prone?

I was surprised to see calyx open and flowering not realizing this is the "bananas" everyone mentioned.

Guessing Tangie does not like to be mainlined, which is how I got to this point. I believe it pollinated my blue dream and most likely itself... I have yet to pull those buds from drying to trim them.

The calyxes are where the highest concentration of THC and other cannabinoid bearing trichomes are present. Moreover, there's just too many of them to make it worth your while to trim for any perceived benefit of avoiding plants tossing bananas and self-pollinating.

Your time would be better spent figuring out what in your environment stressed your plants to the point they threw nanners and self-pollinated, and then fix that.

I don't mind being methodical if it gets me to the right results. Trimming already causes me to be so and Femininized seeds I think we're a great learning experience result. I can't imagine tossing about 6 weeks of veg after I find something like this in the future. I also tend not to look for calyx to smoke but buds instead. Still learning and weighing all pros and cons on final results. I am fairly certain it was the triple topping that stressed them. Only my 2nd grow. If I should be separating calyx for a secondary purpose... I'm all ears. What do you do to separate or use them to their potential?

No... My first grow had them as well. But no nanna's grew out of those. They stayed a regular calyx. Bringing me to this hermaphrodite situation. No males here, started with feminized seeds and had full buds. So this is truly a hermaphrodite. If I can snip these calyx without penalty to my budsites....win win

I wasn't finding nanna's in my buds only below them but going off of what you were saying with them being a collection of calyx. I understand where your going with it. The last photo in the op shows what I'm dealing with

Stress can also induce hermaphroditic traits.
I have a Primal Punch F2 that I had to supercrop just after flip and she popped a few random nanners on some of the lower bud sites.
I was able to pluck them and she hasn't shown any more since.

That was my experience, 3 toppings for the mainline during veg and only the budsites near the 3rd topping, after the flip they grew nanners inside of those first calyxs. Glad to hear someone else who just plucked em free.

Popping off the nanners is a different thing than trimming every calyx off your plants. It's possible I misunderstood your question.

If you watch your plants and catch them soon enough you can remove the nanners before they send out pollen.

Yeah that was partially my fault do to my misunderstanding what a calyx is as well. Just figured those in question. Similar to how I took off one with scissors in the photos in the op.

Those are what are sometimes called "pre flowers". They are still calyxs but yeah not part of the main bud site.

You could remove them all, but those nanners are just as likely to pop up in your main buds too.
