A friend received a seed from a specimen unlike anything Ive ever seen. The most amazingly potent beauty I have ever seen. She looks like a Neon green, hairy, popcorn nugget covered in crystalized sugar.

So far, the little bugger is thriving. As a matter of fact, it took less than 12 hours for it to shed it's shell and show the little white tail, yet 2 more days to rear it's pretty little head. It's only 4 days old and it's already about an 1-1/2" tall.
Anyway, right now, It's in a pot of Miracle Grow potting soil under red spectrum fluorescent lights in a closet with a fan.

It's first 2 days of life it was outdoors, saw about 12 hours of sunlight each day(not direct, only about 4 hours direct). Didn't look to healthy. Then she was moved indoors. The type of fluorescent light being used has more of the red spectrum which I understand is better for flowering. For vegetative stage, it needs blue light or daylight.

It's first 2 days outdoors, it didn't seem well. Once it was moved indoors and put under a red spectrum light overnight, then moved outdoors in the early am where it spent the whole day, it seemed to perk up.

To sum it up. It was hatched. In a small biodegradable planter that had Basil plants growing in it, a hole was poked into the loose soil about 1/2 inch down. The hatchling dropped in, covered loosely, lightly watered, put outdoors, indirect sunlight for it's first 2 days. By the 2nd day, it broke the surface!! At the end of it's second day above the surface outdoors (it was out all day) at 6pm when it got dark, it was bought indoors where it sat in the dark till midnight. It was then put under the Red spectrum flourescent light till 9 am (9 hours under the red spectrum light). At 9 am it was taken outdoors where it stayed all day till dusk (tonight) It is now in a dark closet. Has perked up and looks very strong, it responded very well.

What to do different?

What do we do to ensure it's success. Need simple tips, inexpensive things to make her life a good one. Want this to be fun, not an ordeal. Please help!!

If it is male, can it be forced to become female? If it is female, how can it be cloned?

you want to give it 24 hours of light a day i usely give it 24 hours for two weeks then i put them under a mh light and go down to 18/6. 18 hours of light 6 hours of dark. putting them right into 12/12 will flower them. its ideal to most people to let it veg till it's 10 to 12 inchs high or till it shows sex.then change the light to 12/12. anyway good luck.

If you live in the US, go to home Depot and pick up a cheap 50w High Pressure Sodium outdoor security flood light made by lithonia. It's about 35$. You can also buy this online. Hang it from the ceiling and have it point at the plants (no closer than 36" during seedling stage, or 24" during veg.

If you DONT live in the US, Go to the local home improvement store and pick up:

An extension cord - about 2$.
2 of the screw in light sockets - about 1.50$ each.
a pack of "marette" style wire connectors suitable for wire gauges 12 and lower (lower numbers mean bigger wire) - about 3$ a pack.
2 42w blue/white CFL bulbs - about 6$ each.

And wire it all up (connect the white wires on the light sockets together, to one side of the extension cord, and screw a marette connector on, and do the same for the black wires, obviously using the other side of the extension cord)... Plug her in and hope for the best :p. You can't do any damage if you wire it wrong, just never handle a live wire, always unplug if you need to make adjustments.

Then, hang the lights so they're within 6" of your seedling, or 3" of your established plant.

As for other things... MG soil is pretty sucky, but it's better than most "walmart" type brands. If you have any calcium around the house (Tums work for this, as do calcium suppliments) you can grind about an 8th of a teaspoon of it up, dissolve it into distilled water, and use that to water your plant the first time. This increases the pH of the acidic MG soil, and provides a great source of calcium for your plant.

Other than that, don't overwater, don't start adding fertilizers until the fourth week or so, and for fuck's sake, post pics :D
