help with grow lights

my friend told me that i can veg under a 1000 watt hps with 18 hrs on and 6 hrs off is this true or do i have to buy mh bulb thanks for the help

HPS works fine for vegging and flower

They grow a little different, but will still grow very well with the hps

The stretch a little more, a little more leggy, probably wouldn't notice if you didn't put 2 right next to each other......

My clones aren't stretching at all under the hps.
I just gave a guy my old 400w setup that used a MH conversion bulb that had like 33,000 lu and the HPS had 50,000 lu, and both were 400w bulbs.
So it might not be the exact spectrum needed, but its getting more lumens for growth.
