Help with Bud Root

Hello guys,

We want to share with you. situation that we are dealing with in our last phase of flowering: bud root
- we recently changed the hps lights to leds and the humiditidy took us by surprise - it has grown very fast to more than 80%. With the old lights, the humidity was on a stble level.
- as I mentiond, the humidity is more that 80% and it is very hard for us to lower it, even with the air conditioning on.
- recently we forgot to open the fans, and they stayed closed for 10 days :( Due to this we noticed some mold on some of the buds - like a spider web.

What is to be done? Fast harvest - even if they needed one more week in the flowering phase? Or should we take care of the buds where the mold appeared?

We appreciate every answer/opinion you have for us.

Personally, even if they had 1 more week, I'd be chopping. I would take the buds down to nuggets, pitch whatever is rotted, and do a "bud wash" on the rest of it. Even with an A/C unit, I would be running a dehumidifier to get the humidity into check, not just rely on the A/C alone because it obviously can't keep up. When it's dry, I would do a 2nd bud wash, then make bubble hash out of the entire run.

I have no exp with that so Im no help with rectifying your problem....sorry. But why did the change in light make the humidity jump to 80%?

I also changed from HPS to LED about 3 years ago and noticed no difference in humidity levels. So I'm not saying it couldn't, but I can't understand why it would. I dont know much stuff though so itf anyone wants to explain it to me then please do

Less heat burning off additional humidity with LED. If you live in a dry climate it's a bit less of an issue but still an issue.

With less heat burning off coupled with the thermostats not starting the fan as often the humidity soon climbs.
The air outside is 80-90% the heat from hps is more than welcome in my part of the world.

“Perhaps one of the most unnerving details about what happens when you smoke moldy weed is that it affects consumers differently, depending on your body, health, atmosphere, and a number of other indicators.
If you’re an overall healthy person, moldy weed likely won’t pose any massive threat to your wellbeing – but you’ll probably still experience unpleasant symptoms like excessive coughing, wheezing, lung irritation, or nausea, and you’re definitely still at risk to experience life-threatening symptoms.
On the other hand, if you’re immunocompromised, have pre-existing issues with your lungs, or, most dangerously, are allergic to mold, smoking moldy weed can have very serious health consequences for you.
However differently it may affect consumer to consumer, there’s no denying that smoking or vaping moldy weed is overall dangerous, unhealthy, and should be avoided at all costs. Here are some of the dangers you may incur if you happen to smoke moldy weed:
  • Sinus Pain/Congestion:
Inhaling mold will likely result in sinus pain or congestion, and even more so if you are allergic to mold. In some extreme cases, this may result in a persistent sinus infection.
  • Fatigue/Muscle Weakness:
This can be tricky to identify, since many strains of cannabis usually result in consumers feeling physically tired or sleepy – especially if you’re consuming large amounts.
However, only you know your body, and if you’re experiencing a form of fatigue or weakness that you’re unfamiliar with, this might be from smoking moldy or otherwise contaminated cannabis.
  • Brain Fog:
Another unsavory side effect of inhaling mold is brain fog. Again, this can be a little tricky to identify, since high amounts of THC can result in consumers feeling a bit “foggy.”
However, there’s a noticeable difference between THC-fueled fogginess and actual brain fog, which can leave you feeling confused, disoriented, or at a loss for words.
  • Persistent Coughing:
Okay...I know. Tricky to identify, right? Especially if you’re a newer consumer who coughs your lungs out every time you take a hit. However, if the coughing persists for some time after inhalation or is painful, this is a sign that something may be wrong.
  • Chest Pain:
Again, if you’re coughing so hard and persistently that it’s painful, or you feel general pain or pressure in your chest after consuming, you may be a victim of moldy weed.
  • Fever:
This only happens in rare, extreme cases, but if you believe you might have smoked moldy weed and you have a fever, you should see a doctor immediately.
  • Mold Balls:
This also only happens in rare cases, but it is the worst reaction your body can have to moldy weed.
If you aren’t careful, or are consuming large amounts of moldy weed, the fungal spores you inhale can snowball in your lungs, resulting in mold balls that you’ll likely need surgery to remove. This can lead to serious cases of pneumonia, and even be deadly.

Yeah heat just seems like the obvious answer, but I assumed the OP would have noticed their temps also rising alongside RH and would have also realised the obvious and therfore wouldn't have started this thread. I guess not. Lol

So if its heat then I'm assuming that it has to be due to leaf temperature from radiant heat then causing the plants to transpire more? Because as air temperature increases, air can hold more water molecules, and its relative humidity decreases.

In my tent the temps are exactly the same when I changed from HPS to LED. I grow during winter and warm the room its in to regulate in-tent temps. I just have to warm the room more with the LEDs. Never got a change in RH. I have no thermostat, my fans (for both extraction and circulation) just run 24/7.

Excellent info, thanks so much for posting this. It's so tempting, for newer growers especially, to want to smoke moldy buds if it's their only stash but this is all you should need to read to convince you not to. It still really sucks to lose a plant to mold.

I’ve been “consulting” a big grow for a newer grower. Warned him multiple times about defoliation and humidity and air flow. Asked him to please check daily for signs of mold or bud rot including PM. Oh yeah he was on it. Not to worry.

Went over last week to check everything and 9 of 11 beautiful plants had bud rot. Advised him to ditch them and to ask if they could be used safely for distillates. Told him remove the 2 unaffected before they got bud rot. He was on it. Went back the other day. He had not removed them because “none of the trichs at all were amber”. Of course both had bud rot. He’s bound and determined he’s not going to toss them. Then wonders why I pass on smoking anything there. His second crop

I just don't understand people like that. Why have a consultant to advise you if you don't want to listen? That stuff drives me nuts. I'd pass on the science project buds from that place as well.
I tend to have too much airflow under the canopy because I'd rather deal with a little windburn on the fluffy lower buds than have to worry about bud rot or PM. I have a hard time inspecting them because I have a really bad back so I lean heavily on prevention. It's what kept me from growing outdoors this summer, I just didn't want to deal with the bud rot come October. I really appreciate and admire the guys that can do it successfully outside but it's too much stress for me.
