Do you have a ballast for that bulb or are you trying to plug it into a standard socket?

"HID lamps provide light from an electric discharge or arc and have a negative resistance characteristic that would cause them to draw excessive current leading to instant lamp destruction if operated directly from line voltage. The ballast is a power supply for arc discharge lamps. Its purpose in HID lighting is to provide the proper starting voltage to initiate and maintain the lamp arc and to sustain and control lamp current once the arc is established."

yeah you need a set of ballast gear to make the bulb fire up..
Dont think i've even seen 100w ballasts for sale, most ppl working with low watt setups just buy cheap 150w econolights and strip them down to wok in cabs etc..

might be worth you checkin out the thread in my sig, its for the 150w hps club, and theres wiring diagrams and strip downs of econolight and other type HPS lights.

how long is a piece of string? you'll generally get what you pay for. you could probably look around and pick one up for £20, you could probably also look around and find one for £100. all depends on what you need really. cheap ones are generally not gonna be as reliable, i'd be worried about fires from cheap jobs (they get HOT!)

i'm not too sure on backwards capability of ballasts, i.e. a 600w ballast in conjunction with a 150w bulb, but typically you'd want your ballast to match up with your bulb. from what i've been told though, 250w HPS bulbs are realllly pushing it, and 400w is the norm. lower than that and people tend to stick with CFL lighting due to it being very very cheap in comparrison

the 150w will grow some nice plants if you have the grow space setup right.. their efficacy can be seen in the 150 thread.
but obviously bigger is better if you have enough ventilation and no heat worries.

ah, good to know. i've always been told not to bother with anything less than 250, and even that should have some cfls alongside it.

i'll have to take a gander at that thread you mention :)

MYGIRLS has a couple videos on youtube and had a thread started about backwards compatability of lights... the videos are of him using a 1000w MH bulb in a 1000w HPS ballast... and a 400w MH bulb in a 1000w HPS ballast.. he says he has been doing it for a couple years... https://www.rollitup.org/general-marijuana-growing/207313-im-here-end-all-about-3.html#post2666286

although this is only true with MH bulbs in HPS ballasts.. for some reason HPS wont work in MH ballasts... but you can use any size MH bulb as long as you have a ballast big enough to run it.. the wattage of the bulb cannot exceed that wattage of the ballast... only equal to or less than... this means you could get a 1000w ballast to start with.. use a 400w bulb in it to germ with.. switch to a 600w to veg with.. and 1000w to flower with.. not only would you save money on electricity over the grow period... but you would save on bulb life.. not to mention the cost on 2 ballasts you wouldnt need to use...

go 4 all sorts of prices just make sure u buy a hps or mh 100watt ballast when u do anything else will blow the bulb or wont be powerful enougth fancy buying a light without a ballast were did u get that from lol

If this is for a PC grow, forget about using the HPS bulb. I PC case with a remote ballast isn't very stealthy and I'd be worried about heat issues. One 65W CFL is all you need, maybe only a 42W. You need a soft white bulb for flowering and one daylight bulb for veging.
