i flushed tank for 8 hours and gave a small feed of 0.7 ec
ph is about 6
new growth looks a nice colour of green and i can notice new growth at the bottom of the plants and also at the top

should i add some ph down and bring it to about 5.8

no. leave it alone until it goes up to 6.5.. then you can bring it down to 5.8 ... but don't overadjust.... if you bring it down too much, don't worry.. too low is not bad like too high..

Add your acid in a diluted orm.. don't just put drops of pH down in your nutrients..

sorry for seeming dumb but what do you mean. how should i add the ph to the tank

i didnt adjust ph i left it as it is

how do i know when i should be upping the nutes and when to give it more

He's saying to measure out the acidic pH down in a side container and mix thoroughly before adding to your reservoir. This will ensure that everything mixes evenly, and there are no pockets of acid in your water messing with pH levels.

hmmm... It is hard to tell.. Leave it be for now.. You should keep an eye on the new growth. as long as that is coming out OK, you should be fine..
