I inoculate my soil with microbes etc to prevent that (dampening off) even still once in a great while it can happen

I think you are probably right. There's no way a T5 could hurt them. After all I was told to pull the light right down on the seedlings. So I'm sure it wasn't the light!

That's where you messed up, you want the leaves ABOVE the light. Everyone knows sunlight is used by the microbes in the soil not the leaves.
