Well here's the deal guys. I'm setting up a grow room based on al b. fucts how to grow 1.5lb every 2 weeks. The room is going to be set up in a 900sq ft unfinished basement. There is no heat or a/c in there though. And it's winter here now and the outside temps are 20-30F, while the basement is 45-50F. During the summer it stays nice and cool down there. The grow room will be roughly 9x9x8'tall, and have
2 - 1kw lights in cool tubes. What would be the best way to ventilate this room? I have 3 windows down there if I need to use them. Bringing air from outside will be to cold won't it? Or can i just get my intake air from the basement and exhaust it into basement? This whole ventilation deal has been a real mindfuck:wall: for me the more I think about it. All help from you guys is much appreciated. Thanks again!!

To begin with all the heat from the bulbs will likely not needed to be sent outsideb the grow rrom yet alone the house. Why waster heat you have alreadt paid for. It will be nice to have the lights close to the plans so the cool tubes will low that, but you need to keep enogh heat within the room to keek the grow room temp up toa t least 75 degrees F. You alos might as welll heat the rest of the basement to 75 degress while your at it. This would ,mean essentially ducting no heat from the light tubes directly out isde. Pick the window furthets from the grow room area and install a fan to draw air in through the window only as needed controlled by a simple line voltage "cooling" thermostat placed near the plant room. Open a window nearer the plant room just a very small crack to assure that you have a steady supply of fresh air so you have enough CO2 for the plants. With such a simple system though you will need to use a crabon filter so as to keep the smell of growing pot at a reasonable level. If your lucky the basements mass will soak up excess heat durig the day so the temperature does not drop much at night when the lights are off.

So would I just put a "Y" fitting on the duct of the cool tubes and dump the heated air from the bulbs into the grow room instead of outside grow room? And the exhaust fan wired to a thermostat will control the overall temp of grow room? Thanks for all the help guys, I'm starting to see it now!!

Vent the heat to a furnace duct and use it to heat your house. I havent had to use my furnace at all and its got down below zero.

Draw air from outside the room, dump it into the grow room (just cool the lights) then send any excess heat outside the room to the basement with a seperate line voltage thermostat controlled fan used for cooling. i.e. http://cgi.ebay.com/HONEYWELL-LINE-VOLTAGE-THERMOSTAT-120-V-277-V-AC-T-STAT_W0QQitemZ290386837132QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item439c677e8c

Since the house has no vet system to drawn new air in, you will need to construct an entire circulation system for your grow area. If you don't, the heat issues will be crazy, and you'll have too much temp swing in the winter time when you lights shut off each day, especially growing as much as you plan to grow.

The basement walls, floor etc will temper the changes in temperature. Before the temperature rises the whole of everthing in the basement and the concrete walls and floors will also have to heat up. Yes the basement will need an influx of fresh air so that the plants will receive enough CO2. As in most places through out the country earth temperatures are about 52 to 54 degrees all year round at a level 4 foot below ground level so it is quite doubtful that over heating will be an issue. If it is a problem it is quite likely that simply opening the basement window further will be adequate for cooling. As far as low temps at night, the entire mass of the basement and all it contains will have t cool down before the plant room cools down as the plant room is contained within the basement. The grow room will not be cooler than the air hthat surrounds it.
