you can put the stem in water and it should root that way, it will take 2 or 3 weeks though or you can just put it in moist soil and that might work. put a plastic bag over it or a soda bottle... Rooting hormone will speed up the process and help you have a higher success rate, but you can still get it to root without it. take a few clones for backup.

Water method not 100% by far, and 2-3 weeks may be a bit optimistic. It can't live on water alone, but it can grow roots.

Me? I'd get some rooting gel/powder and follow the cloning directions in the FAQ's.
If you're broke, I suppose you'll have to do the water thing. It works, but isn't ideal by far.
I cover my clones with clear, plastic gallon containers, turning them over, poking a few small holes thru the bottoms, then using the lid as the floor . . . ie: setting the clone on the lid and pressing the "dome" onto it.
Short of that, you can make a tent out of any clear, plastic bag . . . maybe use a few sticks to keep the plastic off the growth. I don't believe there's anything to be gained by covering a clone that's in water?
Good luck.

Mine's called Shultz TakeRoot, a rooting hormone powder . . . got it from W-Mart several years ago for about $7. There's a lot of it . . . ie: it's gonna last me for the rest of my growing days.
Never seen the gel anywhere, nor looked for it.

putting the clone into plain water does not work very well. I have not successfully rooted one using that method, they always seem to die after 4 days. The stem rots.
I have had lots of success using Vermiculite. I put vermiculite into a small pot and then soak it with water, dip my cutting into the rooting powder then push the stem into the vermiculite. Then just put the pot with your clone into a dish of water so the vermiculite can soak in the water from the bottom to stay moist. I put them into a clear plastic container and put seran wrap over the top and set it in the shade.
this method usually takes 8-10 days.
