Help building a box?

Hi all.. brand new to this. After waiting 3 months for my friends to supposedly help me get started and them getting as far as getting a quarter built box in the basement which has been sitting there for ages; I figured it was time to go on my own.

I am planning on building two boxes in my basement; one for veg and one for flowering but for now I just want to build one to get started as follows (this will eventually turn into the flowering box).

8 feet long by 5 feet wide by 7 feet tall. What I need help with is the construction materials. Basically I was planning on building it out of 2 X 4's and plywood.

Now for nailing, screwing stuff in etc. I am fine and I am sure I could build something no problem but I am wondering if anyone would mind giving me a list of pieces I would need (thickness of plywood, will I need a middle brace yada yada) and correct me if I am wrong but I am better of using screws than nails right?

I then plan on caulking the edges (what kind do I need) and painting the whole thing (except for the bottom) in white (glossy I presumed but should I use matte)?

Any help greatly appreciated. I know there are other box "plans" out there but none of them match this which I am hoping will hold between 16 and 24 plants.

well this isnt house construction. so do this

Lay your plates out (2x) pull your tape from 1 end mark every 2feet. your going to put studs here 2x4. for the corners. u will need your other walls to have something to connect to. Make a L outa 2 of your 2x4's so now u will have a L 1 side 5inchs wide other side 3 1/2. u want to put the wider side in towards the side wall connecting to it. (basic wall building) for Plywood. 1/2" will work just fine 5/8s if u really want. If u want to add a shelf im sure u can figure that out after its all together. Some people will say line the inside with some Mylar. or just paint it white. eather or. (Mylar is better). If you build it this way with the corners u really dont need to caulk shit but... if u want to caulk just buy any old white silicone caulk.

I like Nails better for the Main construction. Nailing Studs to your Top and Bottom Plates. Then If u wanted u can use Screws to screw each wall together so u can easily take the walls apart..

Any other questions just ask
(10 year home builder)(4 years of schooling)
(MJ grower 2 months)
(Smoker 8 years?)

after reading my wall thing it might confuse u so this is it in a nut shell.

Lay 2x 2x4's down Parallel your 8ft's pull tape from 1 end. mark 12/24/36/48 ect.
At this time U will want to make 2x Corners. 2x Studs Nailed Together to make a L. Each 1 of these goes on each end of that 8ft plate.
Now put a 2x4 stud on each one of those marks u made 12/24/36/48 ect.
Now you can nail your top plate and bottom plate to the studs and corners.
Doing your corners like this will get rida the chances of any light leaks. Never mind the plywood overlapping that in its self.

(remember) You said you wanted 7ft tall. so u will need to cut your studs length to 6ft 9" Top and Bottom plate = 3inchs together. so 6'-9" stud with top and bottom plate = 7ft

Thanks for the info.. about what thickness plywood would you use? The top is going to have a hole cut in it and a carbon filter put in with a fan underneath blowing the air out. I also plan to hang 1 maybe 2 lights inside. The bottom will hold the plants of course and the sides will have nothing except (maybe) a small fan attached to one (rather than the floor so I don't electrocute myself :P) so I am not sure the sides need to be as thick other than to keep the light from spilling out and odor control.

I appreciate it isn't a home hardware here but I am pretty sure the guys at my local home hardware stores will figure out pretty quickly what I am building if I ask them for help :P

just use the 5/8s plywood from home depot for the walls. for heavier plywood for the ceiling and floor use the 3/4 tongue and groove plywood. if u are not sure what that is just say im looking for a sheet of 3/4 tongue and groove plywood to put down on my floor. the 3/4 T+G is heavy shit. and i said for the floor because the 3/4 T+G is also weather resident to a extent. so that will help with any water spill er what not

if you wanted you could go with 1/2 plywood for the walls. but the 1/2 cost more then the 5/8s around here and the 5/8 is a better product.

Thanks much appreciate it! I will go price it all out tomorrow (Canada and for some reason lumber is expensive here).

Thanks again!

also for the ceiling. your going to want to decide where your going to put your lights or vent er what ever u want up there before u actually frame the top maybe? that way u can actually decide where u want to place stuff and not have a brace/stud in your way.

and u saidd 8ft by 5ft wide? u might want to change that to 8ft x 4ft? that way 1 sheet of plywood would cover the top with no cuts or pieces? idk just thinking lol. i would love to have the space to build my own box. for now i gotta deal with a closet thats way to hot and to hard to vent and cool lol

then again another thought. alot of light fixtures are 4ft wide so in that case u would have a hard time fitting multiple 4ft ballast the short way

Yeah I had found some at the local Kents store (maybe it was home hardware, anyway) today that was 5 feet but I know it wasn't tongue and grooved so Maybe you're right I should stick with 4' deep. I want to have another one of these only smaller for a veg room so I can have a couple of grows on the go at the same time (at a later time down the road). I'm guessing 7 feet tall, 8 feet wide and 4 deep would be plenty enough for 16 - 24 plants anyway in flowering state?

I'm really new to this so just reading as much as I can, starting it off one stage at a time with building the box and hoping my so called friends show up with his clones and helping me out with how to manage the first grow from start to finish and after that I will be good to go on my own.

Starting with this box and gonna go from there :0
