Good call, forgot all about those. I'll get those ordered today. Haven't decided on which nutes to use yet, I'll take a walk down to my local hydro store and see what they stock.

Is it safe to start the seedlings under a 600 w/cool tube? Or should I get some other light for the first week or 2?

What soil you using?? If soil make sure you have 30% perlite for proper drainage. Start out in small (solo cups) containers and pot up when needed. You can use a larger hid if that's all you have, just keep it a couple feet or so above seedlings. I use a 2ft 6 bulb t5 HO or LED for seedlings and clones. Never grown any known genetics myself but the black domina would be on top my list.... Smoking Purple Yagermeister currently and love it. Might need an EC meter to measure npk

I was gonna go with the canna terra professional soil from amazon.

Product Description
CANNA Terra Professional is a nitrogen-rich potting mix for plant cultivation. Your plants grow best in a nitrogen-rich potting mix. CANNA Terra Professional potting mix is unlike anything you will find in a garden centre. It contains a blend of sphagnum moss peat, compost, worm castings, perlite and a special 'natural plant booster' which is a blend of organic ingredients. If you are going to grow indoors or outdoors, this is the potting mix you want to use.

That's the description, do you think that would be suitable? I'm guessing I'd have to add more perlite on my own as well.

I'm from Scotland and pretty much everything over here is cheese or some sort of cheese variant :-(

you really should be doing seedlings under like a T5 light, but i ran my under a 1000w MH on a dimmable ballast set at 50%. also im using the top 3 nutrients for foxfarm and they seem to be doing perfect just at like 50% concentration to start

Hi Cheesy,I created an account just so I could maybe help out a comrade from the promised land. I'm not a grower but a close friend is,and I watch what he does as it kinda fascinates me(nerdy-nerd). Anyhoo,he has tried and done more kinds of nute's and fancy formulas than you could shake a bud at,and what he has ended up with is amazing huge nugs with little running costs, here goes. Soil is Canna coco natural, this is a neutral medium as your plants will get all they need from you feed,he recycles this over and over as he say's it get's better over time, the old roots that get left behind break down and R good for plant's(circle of life).Feed is Canna coco A+B from start to finnish, you can print off a feed chart from their website(heavy feed schedule),after four weeks of flower he add's BUD XL from House and Garden(the buds explode into life),oh and because Canna feed is PH stable and water is soft in Scotland there is no need for and adjustments.A dual spectrum build is next,600W, no mucking around having to change anything, the dimmable ballast is a good idea so you can start off on 200W and just turn it up as your plants grow,a small inline fan to blow air in as well as one for sucking air out is a must(these don't cost much to run).Lastly he uses 1L Air Pots once his seeds reach around 8 inches, then re-pots into 15L of the same veriety,he waters these by filling a large bucket with the feed and submerges it to an inch from the top until it soaks to the middle, then he lets it drain off before he returns it home. Growing is not rocket science and people manage to get good results on window's.
P.S. The Air Pots do dry out quicker partly due to your plants being able to take up more feed.Keep it simple and I hope you can use some of this.peace!:peace::shock: Wheew

Lots of good info there man thanks! I'll definitely look more into the canna coco. My kit came with a magnetic ballast unfortunately, I think I'll have to look in to getting some smaller cfl's to get the seedlings going.

not to disagree with advice but as a first time grower soil is more forgiving

I suggest you use canna it has coco perlite and poo poo in it

for nutrients the thing is, it doesn't really matter, just get whatever is cheap you will need way way way less veg nute than flower if growing in soil id say get a bottle of flower like 1 L and then 250ml/500ml grow

also grab a bottle of calcium magnisium

be sure to calibrate/ have the hydro store guy calibrate ur ph and ppm pens then test smth like milk/cola and record its ph/ppm so you can calibrate off that in the future, after a few years u wont really use ur ph anymore as u will know your waters ph and it will all be 2nd nature

so thats basically what you want, for seedlings you will need to get a CFL bulb from the super market, at least until they have thier 1st set of true leaves then u can use your big light(as far away as it can possibly be)

1 thing i wish someone had told me when i first started is that you need to sex ur plants right away

as soon as they are about 20cm tall top them and root those tops, now you take your CFL from before and run it 12 12 in a carboard box or whatever until they show sex, throw away the males and grow on

you will probably want to keep a mother anyway so i do suggest you look into a 30x30x60 tent and a CFL bulb in the 6500K spectrum asap, you can use that to sex your clone in the mean time

i ended up growing out 20 clones for outdoor and 3 monsters in veg waiting for them to show alternating nodes, only 1 was female DOH!

happy growing

EDIT:

this is cheapest and perfect

Hi again Cheesy,I'm not going to poo-poo anybody else's growing techniques as their way works for them, get round the sexing thing by buying female seeds, and here is a suggestion, try the Attitude seed bank online as they have over 100 breeders each with loads of different strains,if you don't want anything going through your bank account you say you will pay with cash, pop the money in an envelope with the order number registered post and they send your seeds,(usually with extra's for you to try). Another recommendation is Barneys farm seeds as he has a 99% germination rate since using them and never a male seed, their strains are awesome(not just cheese),100% with the Attitude as well. Go grow buddy;)

Fit like Cheesy mon, am N.East, Loads of advise better than mine but your choice...
if you wanna keep it cheap a couple of bag's of peat compost 20 ltr (tesco 2 @ £3.50 mix with 2 bags of tesco low odour low dust kitty litter (pink bag £3.75 10ltr ask the Bonsai guys), no need to feed for at least 3-4 weeks keeps moisture/air yet allows good drainage for the roots, ph meter get some litmus paper £1.50 ( i have some you can have), yer in soil not water, my waters from a well @ ph 8+ they grow no probs they are tough buggers take huge amounts of abuse and still love ya' for it (better than wimin),
Pound land has loads of good usable grow stuff from reflective material seed/ clone pots to (hydro) neuts a bit strong on nitrogen but ok,
Plenty of good advise is given above by others i'm just a tight arse an dont like spending ££, Hope it gets together for you...even the crappy grow's a smoke you dont buy :bigjoint:
