Heating Attic Grow Room

This is my first post as I am preparing for my first grow. I'm in the midwest, next to Lake Michigan. The grow room is in the top (third) floor apartment of a triplex, in an attic room without heat. The living area on the third floor has heat, but I can't grow there. Consequently, the grow room is chilly now, about 55° F. A space heater increases the temperature to @ 75° F, but am wondering whether additional heat will be neccessary once I add HID's. I plan to start with four, four feet, high output T5 flourescent tubes.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

The hd will warm it up, the t5s wont, with that said why not start up with the hds, just keep them far away, mine are like 30 inches away during early times

I was thinking about starting with the hds since the space heater will likely use as much or more power as the lights. It has taken me awhile to get ready for this grow, and I bought the t5s this past summer when it was very hot; maybe they'll be useful next summer. I guess I'll go shopping for the hds now. Thanks a lot for your quick reply.

If you use HID's, especially in open reflectors, it will absolutely raise the heat in your grow space, it gets freezing in Michigan in winter so your gonna need that heat, lol. What size HID's were you thinking of going with? If you want the best HID bulbs for growing then I highly recommend CMH/CDM (ceramic metal halide/ceramic discharge metal halide), there a full spectrum bulb that can be used for both veg & flower, no need to change from MH to HPS & CMH/CDM produces better results anyway. If your thinking of using either 250W or 400W I recommend the Philips MasterColor CMH Retro White bulbs, they produce a fantastic spectrum that plants just love, this is the cheapest place Ive found them: (-->CLICK HERE<--) IF your thinking of using over 400W then I recommend the new Philips line of CDM bulbs, they range from 145W to 860W but there vertical burn only (strait up/down operation only) and have to be run on magnetic, MH ballasts: (-->CLICK HERE<--) Not only will any of these bulbs outperform MH/HPS any day, there also priced very well, you just can't go wrong with them. Good luck on your endeavors and keep us posted.

Attics are hard work. You either have to suffer the temp fluctuations or close an area off and vent into/out of the area from the main house with a BIG fan. Trust me, been there.
