Heat question.

Hey guys, I'm looking into getting a 300 watt led light.
I am using 3 of those big cfl's right now and I want a good light because it just takes too long to grow a plant with cfl's.

It's usually around 76 degrees in my closet. Do you guys think it will get a lot hotter if I did get an led?

not really, cfls put off quite the bit of heat

With air circulation, my small( 21" x 21" x 54") grows space does not get hotter than maybe 80 degrees Fahrenheit. My small space heater kicks on when the grow space is cooler than about 78F.

At the moment, I have a passively cooled four COB LED array at the top of my grow space.

Thank you for the reply. Ya cfl's do get hot but if their farther away from the plant their not that hot.
My average temp is 80 degrees. Do you think if I add an led would it be around the same as cfl's?

Hello, Thanks for the reply. Ya I'm making sure I keep a good circulation going. I just don't want to get an led that could possible raise my temp by a lot.

Heat is a bigger issue if you went with a high pressure sodium and metal halide grow light. Cannabis likes 78-80 degrees fahrenheit during the day time hours and about 10 degrees cooler during the night.

That's actually not true.

You simply buy the tube fixture like this:


with a fan and ducting and it's not a problem at all.

Conversely, they don't make tube fixtures for LED's yet, so no matter what you do you're going to be pumping 100+ degree air directly into the tent with an LED fixture.

HPS in the proper fixture is much, much cooler running in a tent than any LED is.

300W of dissipation will produce 300W of heat.

I'm running 3, 68 watt cfl's. So thats 204 watts. If my cfl's get my closet up to 80 degrees than it seems like the led would put out less heat.
Plus you have to put it around 12 inches above the plants. Do you think this will decrease my temperature if I switch to cfl, because that would be great.

Ya my buddy used them and they also take a lot of electricity to grow. His light bill went way up.
That's one of the main reasons why I'm going to probably switch to led.

You have to be careful here.

There's a considerable difference between a bulb drawing 68 watts of current and a ballast that powers a grid of 60 LED's that's being cooled by a fan driven heat sink.

The blanket statement of "300 watts of heat is 300 watts of heat" is, at best, a bit on the dubious side.

If you go back to that Galaxy Hydro 300 I mentioned earlier, it is going to produce a good deal more heat than your 3 CFL's presently do. The reason is two fold: Not only does it have 60 different 5 watt lights giving off heat, it also has the ballast running it that's drawing the 135 watts of current it takes to light up those LEDs to begin with.

In the end, you're going to have to face one reality: More light = more heat. If you're growing in a closet and/or a tent, you're going to HAVE to vent it, and not only for the heat. You've still got to keep fresh air circulating for decent plant growth as well.

In your case, ventilation is your number one issue. The lighting you choose is secondary.

Bro, have you ever used an air cooled reflector?
I will bet you your whole grow op that a 1000W hps in an air cooled hood with ballast mounted outside the tent will contribute less heat to the tent than your cob setup

Well that depends on how much PPFD youre running, Im at a solid 800PPFD and I now run at 86F because thats the most efficient photosynthesis zone for me. The graph numbers at the botton right at degrees in C.
