Hay grass smell

New grower here. So I just had my first harvest. I hung them in my tent to dry 68F and 35%rh. I let them dry for 7 days. Buds were crispy but stems still had moisture, some cracked. So I pulled them and trimmed. Been curing and burping twice a day 10 15 min (been about a week now). I noticed some of my jars have a grassy hay smell which sucks because all the plants came out beautiful dense and very frosty. Is it my drying rh that will cause this? And will that smell go away. I was gonna try brovada packs to bring some moisture back but that damn smell is so disappointing

The best would be to hang the buds in a separate room or tent where you can put the exhaust fan on a hygrostat or dimmer. Controlling all the air out and monitoring humidity slowly decreasing it.

Your buds felt crispy to the touch but are still wet in the middle. That's the problem with drying to quick. You will loose a lot of smell but also gain back some after curing.

I would lay them out on a plate daily for a couple of minutes then rejar to combat any possible mold.

Ill agree on the 35% being way too low and 7 days at 35% would make dust buds.
Chock it up to a lesson learned.
No biggie. Shit happens we all learn from doing its the best way next time you will be much more careful to not get the same results!

I think all boveda packs will do is lock in that bad smell. It's way over dried imho.
Best thing you can do with it is press it, or make some butter.

Boveda will not save your bud. That smell is mold and will not go away. You probably jarred it too early. Very common noob move; maybe next time you’ll wait until the stems are fully dry before sealing it up. Don’t even bother w/ a hygrometer....
Here’s some tips that helped me:
1. Give all your stains at least a full 10 weeks of bloom. Maybe even 11...
2.Snip only the fan leaves with visible stems and leave the rest for finish trimming...
3. Leave the plant as whole as possible at harvest...chop only once at the base and hang the whole plant up by a lower branch; takes 7-10 days or even longer to fully dry average size buds....
4. What until you feel the stems “snap” when bent over; if the stem creases over without an audible snap it is not dry yet
5. Once fully dry you can finish trimming and jar the buds but don’t seal it up just yet...place the lid upside down leaving a sliver open for air exchange for about the first 12-24 hrs
5. Next day put your face in the jar and get a good whiff...of it smells like dank ass weed you are good...seal the jar. If it smells like hay in a barn that is mold; dump out the jar and let it dry....

Yeah I had them drying my flower tent with intake/outtake on. I’m thinking it was my rh and it dries to fast. With work and the kids I had to wait until the weekend to trim. I didn’t wet trim either except a few large fan leafs here and there

I agree with the entire process that's stated above, yet id get a hydrometer just for the fuck of it and throw it in a jar sealed for a hr or two just to see what your RH reads at...

if your not getting above 60 she's too dry, anything above 70 at this point is too wet and would need to be left out over night and rejarred and assessed again the next day etc...

but your smell isn't mold, I know that smell and its the smell of a very quickly dried harvest ... but im still wondering what your jar rh sits at rn.

I liked these for the price, they aren't "lab" accurate but they helped me get a general idea when I first started to help me get a feel for things...

good luck you grew some nice buds, it'll still get you rlly high ;)

and I don't like recommending things like this but I have in my past reinfused terpenes successfully into bud that had been over dried.

I rehydrated to 62% for 1 week, and put a drop or two of a cannabis derived terpene mix on the rehydration pack and after sitting in the jar sealed for another week it took on the smell (and also effects) of the terpene mix that was added.

again I don't like suggesting it bc I don't want the industry to make something like that a standard etc... id rather it be more natural, but again im also open to exploring and experimenting.

to each their own.

I've brought mexican brick pack back to a somewhat fluffy and scented bud before from a powder nug. One of the humidity packs and two 62 rh bovedas in a quart jar. give it two to four days and it will rehydrate somewhat. Better high? eh. Better experience?, yes. I know it sounds stupid but it does work, If you want to bring some back I've used 62's about three for a fuller quart jar.
Just my experience. . .
