i don't see how you would get in trouble , unless someone charged you for trespassing but im sure there is lots feild to run away in.. id be worried that they might start to look for your grow and steal it or even call the cops.. i know people who found a "40000 $" forest grow and they called the cops before calling me i was rather disappointied lol but as far as I see it unless they find your crop and evidence its yours youll be fine.. dont get robbed tho its never fun specially if you know it was them

You can't really get into any trouble unless they find the plants themselves on your person or catch you in the act cultivating them.
Here's a fun little experience that happened to me last season.
It was late march and had 15 little plants I had vegging under lights to give them a jumpstart. Was transplanting them into the woods. Had the plants inside of a shoebox stashed in a bag I had slung over my shoulder. Parked at a local nature park and hiked on out to the area with my buddy.
We get there and get the job done. Get them watered and everything.
We hike back out of there. Get to the vehicle. Spot some police cruisers way down the highway and they have some vehicles stopped and searching em. Then out of nowhere a local cruiser comes rushing around the corner. Spots us and skids to a stop. Does a Uturn and pulls in beside us. At this point we haven't even gotten back in the vehicle. Just had the doors open.
He gets out and starts yammering on his radio for backup.
Get your hands in the air and grabs his sidearm.
Backup gets there in like 2 minutes tops. The bags have a small shovel inside, small hand pick axe and some hot dogs and empty gatoraid bottles.
They order us away from the vehicle with tasers and firearms in hand. Start ripping through the vehicle. First thing they get the bags out and dump em. LEOs look perplexed. Pull out metal detector that was laying in the floor board and a few trinkets that were dug up on a previous metal detecting expedition.
They apologized in a less than 5 minutes and say they got a report from someone who said they saw us going into the woods carrying a mobile meth lab. They actually seemed pissed at the guy who made the report. They had admitted they were back there searching for us for hours. We were miles beyond where they gave up because the terrain got too rough (thank you fast food chains that give LEOs free food)
Moral of the story is have an alternate excuse to why you're wherever you are and have some sort of backup proof. You can hide ferts and stuff around your site. Dig a hole and cover it with a large flat rock or whatever. If ferts would have been in the bag it would have been a whole different story I'm sure.
Metal detectors are extremely cheap and not to mention very lightweight. A birdwatching book and binoculars really don't fit with a shovel and small hand pickaxe.
Another thing to think about is a gold panning kit. They're smaller and lighter. That would explain being in out of the way areas if you're around riverbeds. Take a half pint of goldshlager and filter it. Have the flakes stashed in your bag in something to make it look even more legit.

Damn mine wasn't that serious but back when I was growing outside a few years ago my crop was discovered. The people that lived there said someone was going back there and watering etc.
I show up one day about to water but I notice several cars that didn't live at those houses and I just kept driving.. They ended up searching everyone that went to that section of the park/forest.and they ripped up my plants
... Moral is know your area very well and listen to the dude up there, have a side story

great story grinder and great advice to..i could never think of an excuse why you would need digging equipment with you..if i ever do an outdoor i'll be getting a metal detecter..
here's a kind of worse case deal, i believe if you make a false statement to a LEO, that is a significant crime, can't recall all the particulars
but getting caught with embarrassing stuff, the instinct is to make up a story
in the 'bad' states, i'd have to think your story better be solid

Not a problem at all, in this scenario you're just studying horticulture and doing an assignment out in the fields. And that's just one excuse.
If they don't buy it, you give them that "..........." face and move on.
Though, it really depends how close they find you on your way to your spot for you to get paranoid.

Dude you have NO idea. That's one of those moments where your hearts doing 90mph. Not to mention dudes up on you ready to legally wreck your sh*t with tazers and batons. That'd be getting off light lol. The situation started at lvl10 hostility and in a few minutes went to a .5
Yeah that thing saved the day. Tools being carried are pretty much a one time thing per season. But hey it worked you know? That's what counts.
Metal detectors are pretty awesome though. It's was more of my best buddy's hobby. I'd say 99% of the time you won't find anything but pennies, bottle caps, cans and other junk. Every now and then you'll find some sort of treasure to wonder about. A few things he's lucked up and came across were interesting finds. Old rusty blacksmith tools. A pair of old shackles. Loads of bullets and casings from days long gone. Check around local pawn shops and you can probably find one for a steal.

I was actually looking into metal detecting, they have ones that you set to not pick up little things (caps, pop can tabs, etc) if you're going to a place that used to be fair grounds or something, also they have settings to detect only certain types of metal. I was really interested in doing some under water metal detecting but a set up for that would be like $500.00, just imagine all of the expensive jewelry people lose right off the beach, near marinas etc.
Best advice you'll ever get is to always have an alternative reason for being near your spot.

Great idea man, my Dad just took up metal detecting and actually bought me one so I could join him... now I think it's safe to say I'll be using it a little more often than I planned on using it if ya know what I mean
