Almost 100 COBs will be awesome! What mA are you going to run them at?

I may be wrong. If HID is gone in 5 years I'll eat my words. Supra said the CXB series are approaching the limits of thermal efficiency, so I don't know that COBs are going to keep evolving at this pace. But if the price comes down enough, I'm sure someone will be the first to do a massive COB warehouse grow.
they dont have to improve at all. if they stayed at current spec and price came down its all over

also keep in mind just a few years ago they thought 200 lumens per watt was impossible!

I read the specifications and had long conversations with gavita employees when it was first introduced; the whole point of the DE tech is to run the lamp hotter, which improves its efficiency.

The reason it's in the fixture the way you see it is to ensure the bulb remains in its optimal temperature range for best performance.

This is also why they don't want you to blow air over it as in air cooled hoods, and also why they don't want you to run it vertically.
yes yes yes stikk... I knew that from the get go that's why I got ac/de 8inch hood cause it didn't blow air over lamp like phantom hood did (what a bad design) also I run mine on galaxy grow amp ballast, turboed it once and man did that muthafu*ker get hot stikk:fire:

I run Ushio pro de bulb but gonna switch to Philips Master DE Green Power Plus heard it runs at 42.5% efficient

Yep, ac/de looks like the best air cooled DE reflector for sure. You can even take the glass off and it still cools. Smart design.

If I was running DE with less than 3-5' clearance, I'd use the Ushio Opti Red bulb. It's not quite as powerful as the Pro Plus. Cheaper too. If I had high ceilings with DE mounted up high I'd use the Pro Plus or Philips I guess.

I understand the efficiency of COB LED, but still don't see HID being dead in 2 years. Weed growers are stubborn, man. Even in growmau's video he says "The colas don't get huge, but that's OK". I'm not saying that's the case, I've grown 7' Amnesia Haze coco trees under my COBs that were pretty massive. But this is the perception of LED. If you want that to change, grow huge colas and the masses will follow. As already stated in this thread, efficiency is not everyone's top priority.

Gavitas do get hotter than a mo fo. Running a more than a couple you pretty much need a.c. Hot sumbitches they are

nice nugs bizcolorado , but for me the way to tell is what it looks like in a jar after dry / cure, I have seen gigantic buds shrink to nothing after drying. Not saying yours did!! but since I have experienced it myself, the fresh look, or simply the look for that matter, doesnt mean much compared to actual weight on the scale per square ft of canopy. Still, very nice nugs man!

First you say you don't think COB LED would be good for larger grows, then you say you're going to cram 40 into a tent, lol

I'm putting almost 100 in a small room and I think your assertion about COB LED's lack of suitability for commercial use is incorrect. Not only can they be used this way, they will be, soon, in mass numbers. The economics of the industry demand it.

Chips are getting better and less expensive all the time. Want bright? Up to 2400W! Advertised RIGHT HERE on RIU! want efficient? Guys on here have already built 70% efficient panels and they'll only get cheaper and more accessible as chips keep getting brighter and cheaper.

Two years and it will be hard to sell HID lighting. Five years and you can't give it away.

That 40% number in DE is before reflector loss. 20% loss is real on a gavita. So now you are at 32% efficient. A gavita is around 1.6-1.7 umol/j emitted. So yes cob LEDs are more efficient. End of story. Also spectrum is another factor and plant stress from all the IR from the hps. People only think about the umol and think that's it. Well 1 gpw is pretty common with these cob grows and growma5 hit 2 gpw. I've never seen a Grow under a gavita in any circumstances that his 2.0 gpw. Not even 1.5. If anyone has a link to a journal with a gavita hitting 1.5 gpw please share. No I'm not saying I understand this phenomenon is just the trend we are all observing. Being in sales I've never heard so many reviews all the same from customers/shop owners saying they've never seen such explosive growth. One of these guys that claimed that has been in this arena for 35 years. I'm not going to mention his name but he has a caniculture radio program and knows all the original guru's. To try and write these Lights off as over priced for equal performance to a DE lamp is a grave error. Of course take my ramblings with a grain of salt but time will tell where we stand in the next coming year or two.

You want to see a 2 gpw with gavita? That would be roughly 4 pounds in a 5x5 or so area. No ones posting those kind of numbers here with cobs i don't think.

let me know when a unit hits the market that works as well as a gavita, because there is a reason gavitas sold so fast when they came out. Until then, all this GPW crap and efficiency crap is all just forum fodder.

I have hit over 1.5gpw with single ended . 2gpw under gavitas is happening . And efficiency means different things to different people. Price per fixture, grams per square meter, grams per watt, grams per kW/hr. All have some sort of effect on your ROI . I feel that LEDs are only a benefit to growers with small setups . That's my opinion. But you don't see any dudes killin it with warehouse setups nothing but leds unless they were free
