Hash

Just got a question on hash. How do you get black hash? Im using my hash press and pressing keif out of the bottom of my grinder, but only getting dark coloured green/yellowish coloured bricks of hash. Ive made ice hash once and pressed it, and it was a nice amber colour.

Would you need to compress the keif to an extreme to get it to turn black?

i think the black hash comes from a different micron of trics. ive seen ppl do bubble bags and they pull out some nice blond hash as well as black hash. could be strain dependent as well, but i think it has to do mainly with the size of the trics.

Iso is gross, I hate it. Stopped using it for oil/hash/cleaning bongs/everything.

BHO all the way.

Thanks for the info in the bubble bags, im def going to try them next time with ice hash, to get many different grades of hash.

And thanks mothers finest.

Np. I just had a quick look on Youtube and didn't see it, but a couple years ago there was a great cooked-hash-making video showing the guy wrapping the pressed hash in cellophane (actual cellophane made from cellulose, not plastic) and I think newspaper. He cooked it on Teflon pan, keeping it damp by squirting a little water on it as the paper dried.

I always thought it was dependent upon the harvest stage. If your trichs are more amber wouldn't that give
you a generally darker hash as opposed to harvesting earlier when the trichs would be clear and cloudy?

Here's how I did it using a hand-press:

Filled the tube with dried crystal from bubble bags,

Tightened the press,

Backed it off a bit,

Pressed again.

Did this for 4 or 5 minutes and Voila! Black hash.

The colour comes from breaking down the trichomes, whether by pressure or heat, or the combination of the two.

Why would you want black hash oil? All the old hippies I talk to agree with me that gold or red is way better than black or green.

I have made hash from the same plant - some from the buds and other hash from the leaves. It seemed that the leaves had more amber trichs than the buds. The hash I got from the buds was more blond and the leaves more dark. I have also made finger hash, it almost always turned out darker than water or dry sifting. I suspect that when the trichs burst and the resin is oxidized it turns black, which would explain the differences in color when one cuts open an older chunk of hash.

oh yeah- I missed the link. I remember reading the post when it came out. Hard to forget that one! Nice looking hash you have there- does it taste as good as it looks?

I made some ice has today, used a 1/4 ounce of quality bud, ground up with a hand buster, and froze that. When the hash was done and pressed, it turned out black with a hint of red/amber, very nice. Only thing I did differently was tighten the press, back off, and re-tighten again a couple times, instead of just once.
