Day 57, 6/1

The Big Test Day, 108 degrees!
Up and watered garden but not the weed at 5:30. Sun was hitting them at 6:00am sharp. Normally I would have watered but the moisture meter showed wet so, after two days without a soak, they will face the heat. Ten hours of full sun but will be around to make sure they are ok. If they can handle this heat in pots after being fertilized two days ago then I know they will be fine this summer in the ground. Kind of excited! They look really lush and full this morning.

1:15pm:
103 according to reports. By my laser the shade average around plants is 105-112. Leaf temps in the high 80s to 100 or so. Wish I had a soil thermometer, that's where it really matters. Hottest pot tray covering the pot is 165. Mama's not fooling around today. Hottest hour will be around 4:00-5:00pm. No watering, but will top water the mulch around 2:00 or 3:00 to keep soil temps down. No wilting at all.

Mr Wimply, one of the two males in 5 gallons is mildly dryer than others and he recieved a full watering yesterday. Goes to show how important stepping up is. That extra 2" on the botton and 1" extra diameter is huge. I'll wager the sevens have one week's more growth max! Thank you Mandala for awesome seeds, makes me look good!

Started leaving partially eaten tomatoes on ground. The birds are continuing to chow on them, hopefully they will sate themselves and leave the growing 'maters alone. Wishful thinking. The quail have stopped digging in the pots, the mulch, texas ranger branches, and pot trays are keeping them out.

Told my neice that I would be making a rattlesnake pit in the back yard, hence the covered planter area, so she and her kids will have to stay out of the back yard until late fall. They know I remove snakes for the local homeowners and I needed a place to keep them until relocating them at night. Mostly Diamonbacks but one in five are Mojaves. Bad juju. They have a neuro toxin similar to a cobra on top off the same toxins of a Diamondback. Theives beware! The good thing is that, contrary to a Diamondback, they are very nervous and rattle big time as soon as they know you are even in the vicinity so people rarely get hit by them. Kind of a burglar system that warns the thief, lol!

8:30pm;
Man they breezed through the day. No wilt or leaf curl. In the last two days they have actually grown faster, 1/2-2". They look there best right now so I'm relieved. Used two gallons to top water mulch and what was left went into the five gallon pots. Full sun from 6:00 to around 5:00. Drama over.

Almost as hot tomorrow, might go ahead and heavy water, if not for the plants, for me.

Day 58, 6/2

Thanks. As I mentioned before they are so robust they make me look good. Very happy with how they handled the heat. I'm definately a new parent and a bit obsessive.

They're growing so fast, want them to slow down. I think it was the Maxsea I put in their tea a few days ago. Will water later today, think they'll need it by then. Been more than 3 days.

Need to pick at the planter today, really sucks with this heat. About 1/4 left if I stop going deeper.

10:00pm;
102 but a little hazy cloudy so a piece of cake.

Can't believe I finished digging the planter. What a bitch, had to pick every inch even with soaking it everyday. Very similar to adobe. 34" deep. Dug out 100 sq. ft. and will fill half with soil mix.

Finally watered at 8:00pm with 40-50 ppm. 3 1/2 days since last full water. Plants lacked some turgidity this afternoon but didn't wilt.

Day 59, 6/3

9:00pm;
100 today, slightly hazy. Top watered tonight.

A couple of days ago I opened a new thread in the Harvesting & Curing section asking for tips/opinions re. smoking the growing tips and upper leaves of male weed as recommended by The Marijauna Grower's Guide by Frank & Rosenthal; https://www.rollitup.org/harvesting-curing/533232-harvesting-curing-male-upper-leaves.html
I recieved what I expected, responses pretty much saying don't waste my time, etc. Fair enough, that's the pretty much the general consensus. I snipped some tips today and did a 10 minute 175 degree dry in the oven. Had a hit each from 3 bowls about the size of 2 seeds each, tiny. Now, I haven't smoked in a long time, have a low tollerance, get high easilly. I'll refrain from describing too much the effects for a few days to get a better feel for the experience but I will say those three hits got me very high, lol. Couldn't believe it! More later. Keep an open mind!:blsmoke:

Went to Lowes (quite stoned!) and bought weed cloth, 4 mil. plastic sheeting, 4 bags of 4 different organic potting soils. I sent phone pics to a friend so maybe they will be on here soon. Used the weed cloth as a liner to keep fill soil crap out of planter and rimmed sides also with the plastic sheeting to keep moisture in and bad stuff out. And I do mean bad. Water will drain through the bottom.

Sunk all 8 pots in the planter for tonight and will pull out the two males and a female. Will keep female in a pot and start 12/12, moving indoors at night. 5 pots in the planter; 4 in the corners, 1 in the middle. 55 cubic feet of soil, about 4 1/2'x 6 1/2', 11 cubic ft. per plant. Greenhouse walls will be 7'x10', 70' square for the vegetation. Plant width space from 3 1/2'-4'. Plant height about 6" with a flat roof, 4' greenhouse walls, and not visible from off property.

Will add about 4 more happy frogs in a couple of weeks to deal with settling and give the plants 16-18" soil depth. Plants will get even more sun here, about 11 1/2 hrs. direct.

Not a lot of desert grow information on the net. This is helpful!
This is my take so far:

- a hardy strain

- a mild well balanced soil

- mild fert to keep hardy but not soft - dark green is not your friend

- fill the pot, step up, fill the pot, step up, fill the pot, step up...

- mulch and cover pots

- in between full waterings top off upper soil to reduce soil temps and encourage upper pot root development

- in ground soil is cooler, use a planter - it's all about soil/root temps

That's all I got.

p.s. I keep adding my daily posts to an existing post until it times out so this post is actually older than the prior post. Keeps my blathering a little more compact.

Day 62, 6/5

Finally got the five plants in the planter last night. About 14-15'' soil depth but planted the girls up another 2" and will add a couple of inches in a couple of weeks so, with settling they should have 15 or 16" for the grow. Walking around like a zombie today after all of that picking etc. Plus the removed soil was placed in new planters being made at the same time so it was a ton of work. Will submit a sample of the "soil" to the Ag. Extension Service for analysis. Gonna need some serious ammendment!

Watered them in with 2 gallons each and about 5 gallons to the rest of the soil. Total planter is about 55 cubes. Came out this morning at 10:00 and watered planter with 4 gallons. At 2:30 pm dug to bottom to feel moisture to see if it has moistened evenly. It has but it's a light moisture and the meter rated full moist. I would say medium moist.

Need to cut hedge on one side back to get rid of a little shade, although it seems fine. The planter needs some finishing touches such as another level of blocks around the edge but for now it is fully functional so a little break is in store. I do need to add some mulch but the cocoa choir I bought for it sucks so something else is needed...

The plants look great!

The male plant harvest: I am really enjoying this stuff! I can cough very easilly but haven't come close with this stuff. Must be the organic effect? So many millions of dollars of good male weed gets thrown out by the growing majority. What a shame! According to Frank & Rosenthal, the harvest in 4-6 weeks should theoretically be 2-3x stronger than it is now. I'll be watching carefully for maturing balls so as not to threaten the females - I want virgins! Actually a couple of seeds would be ok but that's another endeavor for another time. So, all the effort of winding up with some males is suddenly less painful. I also understand that different strains or just a different plant can be pretty much worthless to smoke.

Forgot to mention, all of the Rishi Kush were female and showed they were, whereas the Krystallica is slower and, coincidentally, harder to sex right now. I'm still fairly sure of 2, maybe 3 out of 4 are females. They fact that they are slower might also suggest the male weed is very immature and will get a good bit stronger soon? I am an optimist.

I was hoping to have more Krystallica as it was my primary choice and the Rishi Kush has a slightly smaller yield. As ol' Doris said, "Que sera sera".

Day 63, 6/6

Have been keeping the 2 males in the five gallon pots pretty dry the last week. The extra stress really forced one to make balls big time. So, final count, it's 6 females, 2 males. The Rishi Kush are looking like a bigger plant than the Krystallica, it's supposed to be the other way around.

In planter:

2 Krystallica
3 Rishi Kush

12/12 soon:

1 Rishi Kush, 7 gallon

Males:

2 Krystallica, 5 gallon, new leaves and shoots to be harvested and cured this week.

Day 67, 6/10

About 100 all week. Plants look very good. 32-38"tall, 24-36"wide, except one Krystallica being 24tall,24wide. Actually just pruned them down to 34". One Rishi Kush would be 6' tall by now if I didn't have to prune. Ah, well. The little Krystallica is showing nitrogen deficiency on some older leaves. Not sure why as it's in new soil. I might not do anything yet and observe for a while. Several possibilities; may have dried out a little shortly after planting, a high pH watering a few days ago(forgot to balance), was in a little more shade for a while, or too moist in it's corner on one side.

Watering planter with 2-4 gallons 2 or 3x a day to keep surface cool and watering each plant 1-2 gallons a day.

Working on getting familiar with curing. Have tried oven, sun, one week cure and will try a couple of full length cures. Need to dig out a humidistat I have somewhere. The weed dries so fast here! Get it right, leave container open for a half hour and the weed is crispy dry. Suggestions? Will probably have to build a curing closet to control the cure better.

Humidifier with humidistat in drying area set at 50%, best bet
Thanks. I'm using different plastic containers and it's starting to click. Eventually I'll use the utility room to operate in. I'll also have to deal with 85 degrees.

Day 68, 6/11

Found a gila monster in the planter this morning! I eased it into a bag and put it under the tomatoes. I rarely see them so it's pretty cool to have it in the back yard.

100 today, not bad. Added two bags of Happy Frog to the planter just to top it off and fill up to the 2" higher planted plants. Then I added a 3 cubic ft. bag of #4 Perlite. They are pretty large peices and covered the planter with a couple of inches of bright heat reflective insulation. Very pleased. Store owner said he'd never heard of perlite as an insulating cover. He has now.

Somebody on opengrow.com mentioned perlite as an insulating cover, and because it's white, it reflects sun better. I had never heard of this either until just recently.

Well, it's great.

I have seven 12" stepping stones down on the soil to avoid the soil/perlite. They are still hot, 120+ underneath them, so they should be painted white. Then the plants will be set for the rest of the season. Well..

Forgot to mention that the gila hung around the back yard, waited for it to cool off, then trucked on up the street, so he's on the prowl. Quail eggs beware.

Day 69, 6/12

102 so far. The highest temp of the day in the desert in the summer is late afternoon, 4:00 or 5:00 sometimes.

Loving the perlite. It's reduced the surface temp by 20- 40 degrees. Hottest spot I've found so far is 103. Most is around 90. By watering the surface in the morning and afternoon it should go no higher. It's keeping the soil moist for much longer, too. Should cut my watering in half which is great since it's ro water and has to be lugged about 100 feet. This will also allow the roots to utilize the soil much closer to the surface.

Day 71, 6/14

105 yesterday, hardly watered. Much better. Cut the two males down and hung them in a closet with a pan of water just to get the curing practice in. I'm not smoking the male shoots anymore since pruning the females has provided plenty and it's a little better, I think. So, five females in the planter and I moved the seven gallon female to a very discreet spot in the garden as it was actually visible from the front door if you knew it was there. Need to get off my lazy ass and set up the lights in the laundry room for her 12/12.

So, have been trying out various growth stages of weed. Tried a female shoot that contained some immature flowers this morning straight off the plant, lol. Barely burned and very little smoke, of course. Went on my way and five minutes later I had a rather strong head fog that turned into a nice stone in about a half hour. I have to work in a client's yard in a bit. He's away for the summer (snow bird) so I'll try some more sun dried and see how I fair. Should be interesting. Disney themed topiaries, hmmm... I'm also wondering if smoking fresh has some advantages due to a lower temp burn from the high moisture content. Sort of a natural evaporator. Feedback, comments, conjecture, moronic dogma? The first three are welcome.

Now that I have the feel for growing canabis I have cut back on much of the scientific observation side of growing. For instance, I didn't note when each plant starting growing alternating nodes, that sort of stuff. I can understand a daily written journal for indoor plants but with all the getting started and digging etc. this first grow is a get the basics down and keep the plants healthy grow. They are one of the easiest plants to grow I've ever dealt with. I'm sure the correct seed choice helped immensely. I think anyone who grows a vegetable or flower garden is miles ahead of most others who endeavor to grow weed. I'm just amazed by all the problems so many growers have. It seems a lot of them over love their plants with too much of everything. perhaps my first serious indoor grow will be more difficult since I'll try large pots and organic.

With buds, smoking them dried offers more potency than 'fresh'. I think the cure brings out other cannabinoids/THC. If you are enjoying smoking leaf, the actual bud is going to be the atomic bomb in terms of potency. I just cook with leaves, I can't really get high by smoking them anymore.

While curing does enhance the product I'm wondering if the fresh weed has some chemicals that deteriorate quickly. The initial pleasant and fairly long lasting buzz was not replicated from the same batch that had been drying for several hours. I'm only using young shoot leaves. More, uhh, research may be required. < edit: I was wrong, it's still pretty damn good!

Aside from one brownie endeavor that was way too couch lock I've never cooked with weed but want to learn more.

Day 72, 6/15

100 today. We're going to get slammed in a couple days, 105-107 for at least the next ten days. Been lucky, only two 105 or more days so far.

Four plants are 36-40". Little Krystallica is 28". Alternating nodes on both Krystallicas and one Rishi Kush, other two r.ks. are opposite. Pretty soon I'll be crawling under these girls. They will all grow together as they have a 3 1/2-4' wide space available for each. Krystallicas are very pretty with their shorter nodes, just as vegetated as the Rishis but more compact. But they still look like a sativa.

Cut one of the male's rootball in half to get a cross section of the root development as I mentioned I would do a while back. It was two or three weeks too long in the pot so it was a little rootbound. I'm sure many would disagree but I don't like any circular growth or "matting". Other than that the root displacement was very even. A nice structural mat at the surface two inches and water absorbing roots from four inches down, some above the four inch line. Shook all the soil out of the ball and have a nice beard-like mat. Suitable for framing. So the mulch/cooler moister soil brought the roots up. I'll wager the seven gallon pots (now in the ground) have more root development at the top four inches.

^ I think a ten gallon indoor grow would be great with these two strains, possibly a seven for the Krystallica, with one six hundred and one four hundred watt lamp per each plant. A tray that fills quickly and lazy susans for rotating.

Day 74, 6/17

102, supposed to get to 105, 107 tomorrow, 109 Thurs. Four gallons surface wetting this morning, 1 gallon each plant this afternoon (2:30).

Small K. at 29", other five (one in pot)at 40-42". Pruned a couple of inches off the potted plant, though. Wish they'd slow down. Two or three months still of 100+ degrees, hasn't topped off yet. Stopped giving them tea a couple of weeks ago, not since they were in pots, I think. They don't need it, especially in this heat.

Will test the trimmings from the potted Rishi Kush this afternoon. Would like to compare an alternate leaved top from an opposed. Going out to dinner with relatives so it will be a good "social test", lol.

Way less insect life in the heat, birds disappeared, too. At night there are a lot of white spiders that sit on the branches with their front legs outstretched. Great protection. If I had any bugs. No chewing, sucking, nothing.

Day 75, 6/18

104 today, windy. Watered one gallon each this moring, couple gallons to the surface. Didn't bother watering surface in afternoon, they just aren't bothered by the heat.

Pics! It's a real grow, I swear! Figured out how to download pics from my old phone to email and then to PhotoBucket.

38" to top of plastic, 55 cubic ft, mostly Happy Frog. Weed cloth sides and bottom, plastic sheet on sides.

Freshly planted, 12" stepping stones.

Today, Day 75, awesome #4 perlite. 42"

Day 76, 6/19

Will be 104 and very windy again.

Not much, watered surface with four gallons, think I won't water any more today. Give the deep roots a 48 hour drying period.

Need to get a frame up for some shade cloth. Would really like to do a nice aluminum frame and attach plastic greenhouse sheets to it in the fall for a winter crop. Try some 12/12 equatorial strains. Because of the depth the frame only needs to be 4 1/2' tall. I might dig down and make a thin center walkway and raise the bed. Having a big honking plant in the middle has convinced me to do this. Raising the bed would reduce plant height so a quicker veg would be required. We'll see.

Day 77, 6/20

Will be 107 today. watered each with 1 gallon and a few gallons on the surface.

Trimmed about four inches here and there, sigh. I have more pruned new growth than I can use, lol. I'd be comatose if I smoked it all. Was really hoping plants would slow down with the heat but they love it and there isn't enough room for lst etc.(60 ft.sq. for five plants) I shouldn't complain, there could be worse problems in my life, lol. It would be fun to grow one or two in the same space and not prune at all, just train them to stay below 6 feet. I would kill for the privacy to grow these things to full height. I could also do this for 40+ hrs. a week and be very happy.

Forgot to mention that the shade cloth is for privacy, not for shade. I'm also a little concerned that they may elongate with the shade cloth.

Reconfigured the shade cloth layout and should get 90-100 ft. sq. That would give each plant 20 sq. ft. instead of 12. Big difference.

Day 81, 6/24

Will take a better pic later.

Been very busy. Has been brutally hot last few days. The three three Rishi Kush are showing signs of flowering, two hardly at all, one a fair amount. The Krystallicas are not, nor is the R.K. in the pot. Perhaps the increased heat triggered them along with my less watering? Those are the only two unique factors i can think of. Yesterday they recieved about 30 gallons and about eight this morning, don't want to encourage any more flowering. I'm not worried about it, just curious to see how it plays out. I hope the shade cloth doesn't further encourage flowering. Learned opinions welcome.

Aside from the flowering they look really nice, all are at 44-45" except for the K. in the back right of pic (can't see), which is 36". The other K. is in the center.

Bought some Home Depot shade cloth and 6' t-bars and will install tomorrow after resting today. Working in this heat really kicks my butt.

36% humidity right now (that's high!) and only 100 for today. Humidity will drop quickly. A brief break and more heat the rest of the week.

I sampled some top growth I think from the flowery Rishi Kush that has been curing for almost a week from my new little bong. Wasn't flowery when pruned. Took four small hits and hopped in the car to do errands. I mentioned earlier that this young stuff creeps. I had seven stops in two hours and had an embarrassingly difficult time completing these tasks. I shouldn't have been driving. What a light weight, lol. This is the first batch that has been this strong.

Not sure what to do with the R.K. in the seven gallon pot. It's too obvious to be carying in and out and I'm not set up for a full time indoor grow yet. The temporary laundry room would be pretty difficult and the garage is too hot. I may just repot and leave her outdoors. It hasn't shown any nute deficiency but is smaller than the planter weed.

your doing nice work, im a couple hundred miles east on i40 working out of a 4x6x2h raised bed with a pvc row hoop and heavy row covering over to hide from neighbors that might look over the fence.. i have a 465cfm squerrel cage blower on the back side which is framed in, and im growing in a mix of ocean forest and coco topped with happy frog soil conditioner. lots of guanos and other goodies mixed in and added on top. last year i did Kalichakra, and she was a big feeder, it seemed like i couldn't feed her enough. this time through its a plushberry, a dairy queen, strawberry blue, northern lights, bubba 76, og kush, and uk cheese. most of em are the phenos that didnt make selection or a couple freebie fems from the attitude. i started in dec/jan and used a 250watt heat lamp and grew some autos, they dont need a photo period, and are cold tolerant. heres that grow https://www.rollitup.org/organics/519222-malignants-winter-spring-outdoor-organic.html

the summer/fall grow is in the same spot, just a shortened the hoop house to open the front area for food crops to camoflauge. and its a raised bed now where as before i was using 5 gallon pots. i love the setup now, ill start a new thread or update the old one, just made an irrigation system with a venturi and forced oxygenation, i put aeroponic sprayers on the ends of spaghetti lines and staked them at the base of the plants. nice fine spray, into the coco.

also, i plant deep, usually its a vegged out mother or i plant a bushy vegged out 3ft monster, i usually trim off the bottom foot of foliage, and dig a 4ft deep hole. i dump in earth magic, tpp compost and Indonesian guano then stab a pitchfork through it to drive it in the bottom layer. then i fill a foot of coco, and a foot of ocean forest then goes in the plant, a foot of ocean forest, and the rest i fill in with coco and top with happy frog soil conditioner. big roots=big buds.

Thanks for the info. Do you have any pics of your current crop? And you went 4' down? That's the poly you mentioned in your email? I could use the poly for winter but it would fry in the summer. I can't go as high as you due to HOA regs, that's why I'm below ground but will get 6' to the flat roof.

Thanks, I'm going to ask for a raise after those uplifting words.

Gaseous Brain Leak: I have been referring to my only potted plant, Rishi Kush, as being in a seven gallon pot. It's in a ten, as were all the others except the males being in sevens. I'll say three Hail Marys.

Day 82, 6/25

Gave them each a gallon last night, skipped this morning and just gave them about ten. Pretty much going by feel. Need to dig a narrow hole to the bottom to feel what's happening, make sure water isn't pooling at the top of the fill. Roots, however are already all over the surface soil. Move the perlite and there are the roots! Loves me my perlite top dress.

Last two days have been nice and mild at around 100-102. Once it hits 105 or so the world as I know it changes into a whole different atmosphere. It's like sitting in an oven. I work with long sleeves, gloves, and a hat that would make a Vietnamese rice farmer proud. I use a t shirt as a head band and it needs to be wrung out often. Heat intollerant Celt blooded woosey.

So, tried a bit of flower/little leaves from a bottom branch of the Rishi that's flowering the most. Straight from the plant to pipe. Little smoke and cool, of course, from the moist vegetation. A very calm, mellow, and pleasant result. Really enjoying being the guinea pig.

Eight gallons tonight. Plants are around 46-48". Still growing too fast (6-8" in five days?). Screw it, if they get too tall I'll wire them up against the shade cloth and whatever wire system I come up with. It could wind up being a very wild and disorganized looking grow in the end. Is it true that plants look like the grower?

Taped the end of a hose to a metal bar and hydrodrilled holes for the t bars to slide into and then sledged them home. Worked pretty well. Will attach shade cloth tomorrow hopefully after work.

Day 83, 6/26

101, very humid. Very hot rest of week. 10 gallons this morning, 10 gallons tonight. Four plants are 48-50", 36-40" wide. Little K. is 40", 36 wide.

Shade cloth is shaky but up. No top yet.

Hasbro, I am liking your journal man!
Thanks for being very clear and using standard English conventions.....it's frustrating when I'm trying to learn how to grow as well as learn someone's unique sub-standard English conventions.

Anyway.....about the shade cloth:
I read in Skunk Magazine (volume 7, issue 5: February/March 2012), "The Rev" writes on the "baby carrot" effect. He says that if you grow outdoors, and place a sunshield above your grow (i.e. wood lattice or sun shade), you may suffer a loss in yield (approx. 15%), but what you do grow will be a very noticeably, higher quality, "always top shelf" connoisseur smoke.

I'm in San Diego where temps are hovering around 85 but I have a removable sunshade that rolls out/in easily. I'm debating whether to use it and go for the "baby carrot" effect. Is the 15% in yield reduction worth the "extra quality" in smoke?

Again, great journal and I hope for the best in your grow. Keep us informed.
