harvested, dried, started cure...hit with high humidity

hey homies,

As the title states, hung my buds to dry until they felt a little crispy and jarred them. Smelt fantastic a couple days into burping. Then my hygrometers came in; I stuck one in the jar for about an hour and checked back...85% rH. I immediately freaked the fuck out and took my buds out, put them on screens and then put them down in the basement with a hygrometer to get a reading down there. I just checked on it and got another high reading, 83%. I knew I was in a humid environment but until the hygrometer, I relied on the weather channel to get a feel for how humid it was. I threw a fan on in the room but don't have a dehumidifier so hoping someone has a good idea or has had the same problem.

//thanks

Go to a gun store. Tell them you need some dessicated silica gel bags to put with your guns. They will have cloth bags. Put one in each jar.

Another option is to put the in paper bags. Just bottom of bags covered, don't stack or layer them. Put them back in your jars in the morning and check rh after an hour or two. Repeat as needed.

Thanks guys, I checked against some other meters and it turns out I had a bad meter. I took my buds out and left them out overnight in my office with a ceiling fan on low. My house smells amazing hah, but the ambient humidity is 66-67%. I put my buds back in the jar, they felt really dry...after a few minutes though getting a 70% reading in the jar. Not sure how to beat out the ambient rH, I think hotrodharley might be right, I need the dessicated silica gel bags to absorb some of the moisture...

Anyone else try it?

Should I even bother keeping them jarred if the RH is 70%? They feel dry as shit and I smoked a little to sample and its harsh but still getting 70% or greater readings inside the jar...

Ordered some dessicated silica gel bags, 2 day shipping. until then, leave them out or jar them?

Doesn't that mean you're not done drying yet?

How long did you dry them by the way? And what diameter/ side are most of your buds?

Btw if your buds are still smelling good I personally think you shouldn't worry too much. Just burp them somewhat frequently for a few minutes at at time until the outside feels a bit crispy, jar, wait and repeat.

That's kind of what I thought. I dried them for 5 days until they felt crispy and then jarred; at the time I didn't have a hygrometer. Once I got one and got the high readings, I put them out on a drying rack for a day and now they feel exceptionally dry. A storm passed in my area and now that it has rained out, ambient humidity is at 60%. However, within a half hour of putting the lid back on the jar it rises up to 70% or greater again; so to your point, you would think they are not dry but I swear they feel really dry, almost too dry and they aren't sticky anymore...

The buds are all fairly small, thickest bud may be an inch to an inch and a half. This is my first grow and I decided to do a staggered harvest so if I mess up during my first dry/cure I would hopefully fail fast then learn quickly and not lose the entire yield to the learning curve...so these buds are my first attempt. They do smell really good, or they did when I started the process. Now they feel super dry and don't smell as strong but I'm still getting such a high reading in the jar. Going crazy over these humidity readings...

Quick update: Have 3 hygrometers, took one that read 60% ambient, put it in the jar, lid on, within 5 min its already up to 68%... crazy to me, these buds feel too dry. I've never grown but I've smoked plenty and know a wet bud when I feel it. I think I almost want to lets these things sweat...

Update to the update: Pushing 73%; switched jars and hygrometers, still up there. Took them out and put them out on a drying rack...again...at what point am I doing more harm then good?

If they feel dry after theyre sealed up for 24 hrs then they probably are. Sounds like youve been drying the hell out of them. Mold in jars usually takes close to a month to set in. Just make sure your burping every now and then, and make sure you feel the buds for humidity when you open the jars. If its in there youll get mold. Personally i just use bovidas after i over dry slightly on purpose. No mold.

Thanks homie, just ordered the Boveda 65% packs. Didn't even know they existed. I also ordered silica gel packs a couple days ago but the Boveda seems like a much better product.

One pack works well in a gallon bag. I dont even use jars anymore.
