Get a pocket microscope and learn to look t your trichomes, there is videos on YouTube explaining how to view them. Yours would likely be all clear, you want a mix of 80% cloudy and 20% amber give or take.

Yea you harvested them a little early. But that still doesnt explain the soft buds. Maybe after drying for 1 day you just now realized how airy they are, alot of moisture can leave the buds in one day.

coulda gone a lil longer, fuck it though im sure it will still be some nice smoke. just make sure you dry properly and give a lil cure and you'll be good to go.

As stated above, you harvested early. The buds are shrinking making them seem "soft". Do NOT harvest your buds until all three of these things are true:

1). Your trichs are mostly cloudy, with some still clear and some already amber.
2). Your "hairs" have turned color. ( Not all of them, strains vary in this regard. )
3). Your buds LOOK DONE. ( Do you pick a tomato from the garden when it's only starting to turn red? ).
IMO, a bud ( unless it's an early taste test ) should never be chopped until it LOOKS DONE. Just look at it, does it look like it's done?

LOOKS DONE?????? For a new guy growing for the first time..........., it looks done as soon as he see's a bud that will burn,,,,lol. I just harvested mine a tad early too. All were cloudy and about 10% amber. Good smoke, but more of a head high than I like. So the next 2 are at 8 weeks on the 22nd, looks like they have at least a week or so yet. bout 99.% cloudy 10% clear. Thinking about going 30 to 40% amber on these, so might be 2 weeks before I yank. Going to try the look done method,,lol

Dude probably 90% of growers chop early in their first couple grows so I would just live and learn.

As other have said , might have been a bit earlie , however once they dry out a bit more/cure , they should start to tighten up a little better.

Hold on guys... Harvesting is a user specific thing.. There are pros and cons of early and ontime harvesting. I prefer my edibles made with IMMATURE buds. These immature buds (clearer trics) for me get me ALERT and more energy then a mendible made with Mature buds.

Yes it Might be a newbie mistake on the OP part (you now how the ability to try immature plants in medibles (hell smoke it or what ever too ) but see how well the medibles are when you use immature buds.. least make a firecracker outta one ...

If I have a few plants and need an early harvest I will cut off what I need and quick dry them (usually inside my car where temps get hell like ) I dont want them to smoke (kinda harsh when you quick dry) then once they have sat in the car I will make oil or caps or other medibles.

Have a buddy who falls asleep in 30-45 mins after eating the medibles with mature buds, he is still semi sleepy when given immature buds but the effect is less... I generally make 4 cups oil this will make about 3200 pills of which I generally take 40-50 in a day, tho I need to make it more potent and take less I still have yet to get my recipe 100%

This article helped me understand when to harvest. Patience is a virtue.

  • "Calyx swelling is a major indicator of peak maturity. The lowest, oldest calyxes swell first and the swelling works its way up to the highest, youngest flowers on each bud. At peak maturity about 90% of the calyxes will almost look seeded, they are so fat.

Three quarters to 90% of the pistils will have turned reddish brown as well. For a basic Indica this takes well into the seventh week of the flowering cycle.

By the end of the eighth week most of the calyxes will have swollen and a surge of trichome development has coated most of the buds. It is now that the development of a very discerning palate comes into play to determine the finest harvest time. Remember - patience is a virtue and often a discipline.

The ripening signs for most Sativas are highly similar, except extended over a longer period of time. Occasionally, some Sativas have windows of peak harvest that actually open and close. That is, for a week or so the plant may exhibit signs of peak ripeness.

However, a week later the plant may have a growth spurt, which lowers the trichome-to-fibre ratio and overall potency for a little while. Usually a fibrous growth spurt is accompanied by a corresponding trichome increase. Again, time and experience are the key elements in this regard."

Yep. that was kinda of my point Mojosdope. Everyone has harvested early, for many different reasons. Maybe they were out of smoke, maybe they needed to move other plants into the flowering room, maybe they just felt like they weren't seeing any further progress in their buds. I wasn't judging him, just throwing out my opinion on when to take 'em down.

what are the best conditions to dry in for optimum smell and denseness?

Im growing a skywalker og x bluedream cross and its at the very end and its very hard to tell if its done.

Also, how much wet trimming do you guys like to do? does leaving some leaf on help or hurt the nugs

right now im drying in this small tent thats pretty hot in there. buds dry in about 2 days. I plan to seperate my grow room with a tarp and keep one side of it dark and dry the buds in there as its much cooooler.

Optimal conditions are 50%RH (relative humidity) at 70-80 degrees with a slight breeze in a DARK room (or area). I like to put them in a cardboard box sealed off with some type of netting to prevent bugs and then put a fan pointing towards it, but just a slight breeze on the buds. Also you don't want to dry to quick (you'll loose smell, taste and get a hay like smell) so you might want to check periodically and adjust the fan accordingly, one guy said he lets them sit a day with no fan just to avoid that, but just make sure it is a real light breeze. As far as trimming, just leave the real frosty leaves that are close to the bud and take off anything without a good amount of trichomes.
