i think it basically means acclimatizing your seedlings/young plant to the weather before putting outside

Indoor plants have not been battered around by the elements so the first few weeks outside can really do a number on your ladies if you don't harden off. I usually turn the fans up in my room and make sure my babies are blowing around good, this will toughen up the stems and get them used to a little wind burn, also witholding a little moisture will force the root system to develop a little faster in search of water. However this should not be done on already root bound plants, that wont help your cause any. Two weeks of high speed fan training and you will be amazed at how much thicker and more resilient your stems are. Much better for transporting water and nutes to growing tips, and a much better chance that the plant will be able to support the weight of its own massive resin drenched buds. Hope this helps. It's like buying a live xmas tree in December. You can't bring it straight into the house, you have let it acclimate to the temp change, so you first put into your garage for a week or so, then move it into the house. Just the opposite is true when you move a plant from indoors to outdoors. Just do it gradually, maybe on the porch but out of the direct wind and other elements.
