Canada: “Canadian deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland, reacting to the International Court of Justice’s order to Israel to halt an assault on Rafah, on Friday said she expected all parties to follow international law.”

Belgium: “The ICJ orders Israel to stop its military offensive in Rafah. Belgium calls for immediate implementation of the decision. The violence and human suffering in Gaza must stop. We call for a ceasefire, the release of the hostages and negotiations for two states.”

Might have to move the ICC and ICJ south a hundred miles, into Belgium, for not compromising one bit and that last sentence sums it up.

Spot on comment from EU foreign policy chief:
The EU’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Friday that the EU has to choose between respecting the EU’s support for international institutions or its support for Israel, reports Reuters. “What is going to be the answer to the ruling of the International Court of Justice that has been issued today, what is going to be our position. We will have to choose between our support to international institutions of the rule of law or our support to Israel,” he said.

The US judge at the International Court of Justice, who President Joe Biden previously nominated to be a legal advisor to the State Department, voted in favor of Friday’s order for Israel to halt its offensive on Gaza’s Rafah.

Sarah Cleveland was nominated in 2021, but she was never confirmed. When elected as an ICJ judge last November, Secretary of State Antony Blinken praised the court as a “guardian of international law.” And when announcing her candidacy, Biden had said the ICJ was one of humanity’s “most critical institutions to advance peace around the world.”

I fully understand Biden needs to consider upcoming elections and navigate a complex geo-political situation but I think anything short of full support to the ICJ, on top of the comments regarding ICC, isn’t a vote-winning strategy.

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt and China on Wednesday signed agreements deepening their cooperation during President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi’s visit to Beijing.

El-Sissi, accompanied by Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, witnessed the signing together with Chinese President Xi Jinping in a ceremony that coincided with the 10th anniversary of the Egypt-China comprehensive strategic partnership.

The Egyptian delegation discussed bilateral relations and bringing stability to the Middle East in light of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, according to a statement released by the Egyptian presidency. It gave no details.

The agreements include collaboration in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which brings Chinese companies to build Chinese-funded transportation, energy, and infrastructure projects overseas.

China invested billions of dollars in Egyptian state projects, including the Suez Canal Economic Zone and the new Administrative Capital east of Cairo.

Investments between Egypt and China amounted to around $14 billion in 2023, compared to $16.6 billion in 2022, according to the latest data released by Egypt’s statistics agency.

Israel seizes key area on Gaza-Egypt border

The IDF said on Wednesday it had seized control of a strategic corridor along Gaza’s border with Egypt to cut off smuggling tunnels as it tries to destroy Hamas.

The capture of the Philadelphi Corridor could complicate Israel’s relations with Egypt, which has complained about Israel’s advance toward its border. Israel says the corridor is riddled with tunnels that have been used to funnel weapons and other goods to Hamas despite a years-long blockade imposed by Israel and Egypt.

Israel has also deepened its incursion into the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where hundreds of thousands have been seeking shelter from fighting, and where intensifying violence in recent days has killed dozens of Palestinians.

The IDF said that a fifth brigade – up to several thousand soldiers – joined troops operating in the city on Tuesday.

Egypt says any increase in troops in the strategic border area would violate the countries’ 1979 peace accord. It already has complained about Israel taking over the Rafah border crossing, the only crossing between Gaza and Egypt.

“The Philadelphi Corridor served as the oxygen line of Hamas through which Hamas carried out weapons smuggling into Gaza on a regular basis,” said Israel's military chief spokesperson, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari.

Also, reminder: Hamas was established in 1987, and has its origins in Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood movement, which had been active in the Gaza Strip since the 1950s and gained influence through a network of mosques and various charitable and social organizations.

Biden providing Israel a way out before they completely kill their international relationships and the US would no longer be able to hold its hand above their heads (sorry for all the weird expressions, trying something new). Plus it's not good for November. "Time for this war to end". Last chance presumably because: “At this point, Hamas no longer is capable of carrying out another October 7, just one of Israel’s main objectives in this war, and quite frankly a righteous one,” Biden said at the White House. It was never questioned the objective (rather than the means) was righteous so not quite quite frankly. BUT with that he takes away Netanyahu's nr 1 argument for justification to continue, who an hour later went on about wiping out all of Hamas, sort of suggesting this doesn't mean he won't go on.

If you don't feel like reading the article: Israel's proposal is very similar to what Hamas proposed weeks ago and they welcome it. Some nutjobs in the Israeli government are less happy but I don't think Israel has much choice left. Don't take this as a poll or indicator by any means but the comments from Israelis on the news seem mostly about complaining other countries are interfering, regardless of the way how.

With a little luck Biden can propose a billion dollar reconstruction package for Palestine (and we get to see Kaag in action finally) and that will be voted down by republican senators and representatives and those idealistic students won't get the wrong idea, that is, no matter how you feel about Israel - Palestine and Biden's responses, Trump is most definitely not the solution. And a felon. Times 34.

EU has a trade association with Israel, which includes that Israel must commit to promoting human rights etc. Ireland with support of Spain (Norway not a member) is about to use that to pressure Israel, it's about more than a couple of billions. Slovenia's government approved a proposal to recognize Palestine too, parliament will vote on it Tuesday. While individually not the most influential members, it's going to be increasingly hard for the EU not to make the 2-state solution part of the reconstruction.

The water system in the Gaza Strip — like everything there — is multipronged.
“The ones who run the water system at the national level are the Water Authority, whose base is in Ramallah, and which receives salaries from the Palestinian Authority,” said Shaham. “After the water enters the Gaza Strip, it is divided among the municipalities, such as Gaza, Beit Lahiya, etc., which are Hamas-run authorities. Hamas then sells the water to the populace at an exorbitant rate, and cuts itself a fat check.”
To repair the pipelines, it was necessary to locate elements inside the Strip that could send workers.

“I spoke with an engineer who lives in Jabaliya,” Shaham recalled, “a nice man whose name is better left unpublished. I asked him why he didn’t move south [as Israel had instructed the civilian population to do at the start of the war]. He said he had nowhere to go and he stayed. We spoke several times during the war.
“COGAT led a major coordination effort, and in the end Palestinian workers were sent to the places where the pipes were damaged near the fence, and repaired them under heavy IDF security.”
He explained that this was “so that our forces wouldn’t shoot them by accident.”
“These were Palestinians who were using heavy machinery and welding tools near the fence. They could easily have been mistaken for [Hamas operatives].”
The IDF troops “formed a ring around them to make it clear that this was a partner, not an enemy,” Shaham said.
“I don’t want to defend this government or everything Israel does in Gaza,” he continued, “but after hearing the prosecutor in The Hague talk about deliberate water deprivation, it’s important for me to say that the Israeli side made great efforts to replenish the water supply to the Gaza Strip, by repairing the pipeline on our side and by helping the Palestinians fix [the pipeline on] their side.”

The latest proposal for a cease-fire in Gaza has the support of the United States and most of the international community, but Hamas has not fully embraced it, and neither, it seems, has Israel.
