Growing with 400 hps

I have about 3 1/2 feet for growing vertically. This space has to include the lights and container. Is it not enough space ? Will there be to much heat build up? I plan to do sog grow so I am just looking for advice

That's way to short of a space. You gotta figure at least 8" for pots so that leaves you 3 feet and then another foot for your light at least leaving you 2 foot.

You might be able to do some extreme lsting and 1 monster plant if you can get it ventilated properly but you wouldn't ever be able to grow anything other then indica dominant because they are going to double if not some times triple in size during flower.

It would be fine for like keeping mothers alive but a 400 unless you have good ventilation and a cool tube is going to be to hot.

If I made the shelfs 4 feet high would that be better ?

I wouldn't go any less then 5'. But that's just me. 4.5 would be the very least I'd do.
