I think the autoflowering advice is very good for your first try in there. You're only going to punish yourself later if you go too complex.

As far as your light problems. Theres something sold at fabric stores called "blackout fabric". Its cheap, lightweight and blocks 100% of light. I mean 100%, I lit a 600W MH directly behind this fabric and there wasn't even a hint of glowing.

It won't smell necessarily. If he chooses to grow a diesel or skunk like strain, yes. But if he goes with a lowryder or something like that, then probably not. Unless he does like diesel ryder or Sour 60 or some shit like that. Then there might be some cause for odor control.
