hey all,,

just wondering what will happen in the next few years,,,,,,as it stands now most states and provinces by then will no doubt be legal, so what happens to us old school outdoor growers,,,,,huge price drops.......no market left at all......or due to it now being legal better prices cause more people are smoking........ or like modern agriculture we need to find niche markets,,,,,like organic or heretige breeds of weed to get top dollar for our pounds,,,,,,,,,,:-( any takers.........

cheers

When its fully legal your gonna have to compete with large scale growers. As scales increase you can profit charging lower amounts. For example my indoor costs me 37¢ per gram including all yearly costs.. we sell expensively say $20 a g cause we have bills to pay (I don't sell my weed usually and when I do at brick prices) but they charge so much to be able to make a decent amount off the relatively little product being pumped out...about an acre can support a thousand plants if slightly tight.. outdoors it costs much less than my 37¢ per gram.. but what if I could produce 5lbs off one plant.
5lbs per plant at a dollar a gram is $2,240.....it costs an outdoor grower much less than 30 cents per gram..but I'll use it for simplicity and also because if I was growing indica and able to throw an extra harvest per year I could cut my 37¢ per gram by 9¢(my indoor crop including all yearly spending is 37cents growing landrace sativas not maximizing my shit) And before i grew indoors I grew year round in west tx so I know its possible....this means that this same profit could be seen off commercial indoor grows

So that leaves me with $1568in profit per plant.....
...1,568 could be cut to- paying for trimming at $500 per plant...$1,000x1,000plants .........so a million dollar profit off potentially 2 acres or so at $1 per gram...so you see how scale effects prices...of course depending on how greedy you are
..I am eagerly waiting for texas to go legal as I'm sitting on 10's of thousands of acres.
Farming is huge out here and I expect local "farmers markets" of weed to be somewhat profitable but like everything else in the world it will be dominated by those able to produce quality product and have the pockets to pump it out. Now this will drive the market and companies to diversify themselves. I imagine curing practices and flavors etc to become marketing strategies and we may see huge advancements in cannabis cultivation like we have with tobacco or other produce

"What happens to us old school out outdoor growers", you'll become obsolete. heritage breeds pffft you mean gimmicks. I'm not sorry for you, practically daylight robbery selling from your old school outdoor for years now? Niche markets, sure, if you can grow the best around with a fair price, just like today's farmers markets which is a fair deal. I'm sure plenty of greedy growers are hoping it doesn't become legal

When it does become Legal through out the Nation.... Current small scale growers will become the thing of the past. Just like the Mom and Pop store against the Big Box stores.
Just grow for ones self.

I'm not so sure....
Niche, small sized operations that focus on product quality and ethical standards are the fastest increasing section of the retail economy.
And that's for normal stuff like loafs of bread, wheels of cheese, jars of honey.

I believe that MARIJUANA will follow a trajectory that has more similarities to WINE than to COLA.

Wine
There are MASSIVE producers of wine.
The inexpensive, mass produced $5 a bottle stuff
BUT the availability of $5 bottles has not eradicated the quality stuff at £25.

Mariujana will be thee same.

There may be some consumers who are happy to settle for the least expensive, generically labelled brands
BUT MOST POT SMOKERS like to smell it and examine it
They're like wine fanatics - but more so.

WOULD THE AVAILABILITY OF ROW AFTER ROW OF IDENTICAL BAGS OF WEED, AT CHEAP PRICES, IN VENDING MACHINES
STOP YOU FROM GOING TO THE POT EQUIVALENT OF A LUXURY DELI....?

I doubt it.

there's a lot more to Marijuana than getting stoned,

There's an entire sub culture around it
and putting $10 in a vending machine to buy '5 Camel Marijuana Non-Tipped'
won't come close to satisfying what most smokers want.

I remember when California was voting on legalization some people voted against it because they would not be able to flip their product as easily. They were claiming "evil and greedy" corporations were going to run Mom and Pop out of business. What do you think Mom and Pop care about more...selling their weed cheaper or having the possibility of the feds busting down their door and taking everything from them? What I also find interesting is that if corporations were to make profit selling weed it would be evil, while when these hypocritical assholes do it they are simply "trying to survive". Im not saying everyone is like this, but these are the kind of douche bags who sabotage real marijuana enthusiasts.

Don't confuse small scale with quality, my price per gram of indoor wouldn't change just more of it allowing lower prices. As long as you aren't solely tending the plants you can't assume the product will suffer..also when you have profits with a few extra 0's you can afford to control your climate exactly, in fact pay people to study what would suit our specific strain best.. running controlled studies of hundreds of plants..hiring people with degrees, actual botanists, people that studied soil life and the uptake/flow of nutrients along with outdoor techniques keeping soil fertile over time.nutes and soil and study how best to do so. Thinking about how nutes effect burn qualities and what people look for in ash, raise calcium to up weight and whiten the ash, potassium expands when hot and creates an even slow burn. Terpenes are synthesized from gpp and can heighten by increasing phosphorus, like increasing n will increase nicotine and nitrates in tobacco. They will be studying the cure with people who actually understand what's going on, most weed growers are completely ignorant of the advances, so prevalent here on riu its frustrating..people stopped taking the time to truly understand what they ate doing. How can you call yourself a professional if you dont. Today's weed growers frustrate me and I will be glad they are gone giving us a bad name..y'all should grow at home if that's you anyway
Sorry kind of went on a rant while smoking

I feel legalization would open the door for professionals that take this seriously and will put in the effort. This is seen with all products. As long as the public doesn't support people who cut corners. But you don't have to, to have quality product at low prices...price per gram doesn't change just the scale of operations and therefore profit

You might be right. But look at the beer industry. Until the early 80's it was Bud, Miller, Coors, Pabst, blah blah blah.

Now micros and on-site niche brewing is an explosive growth industry. People got tired of the same old watered down swill, and those of us that enjoy beer will gladly pay a little more $ to enjoy thousands of brews never available before.

I think BUD is one of the best beers available.
Often Americans seem to equate AMERICAN MADE with low quality
It is not the case.
A frosty cold, half pint bottle of Bud is just the ticket on a hot day.

I don't need something brewed by Peruvian Monks in a secret cave, 3 miles under the sea to feel that I am enjoying myself.

yeah,,,,,,,,like the craft beer bubble,,,,,,,really good weed will always have its place at a fair price. that being said where I am at all legal weed must be from an indoor source and be tested to shit, so the only people able to fly legal are the big boys,,,,so there should still be a market for my bad ass outdoor at a reasonable price, not walmart prices but you know........u get what you pay for

I had this discussion with my friends awhile back these are the results we are expecting.
Around 5$gram
Way easier to obtain.
More small growers short time until big companies get in and GMO the hell out of it.

.....My plan is do a commercial medical grow at a unsaid time in an unsaid location, with the profits become a big weed company and only sell organic buds and make hemp cig tubes and hemp filter.

Growing will be regulated by the department of agriculture. Like the business I run now, there will be license and permit fees, insurance to purchase and taxes to pay. It'll be grate. Wealth redistribution! You'll al love it.

There will be large scale operations that will sell reasonable quality weed for reasonable price, then there will be small tightly controlled outdoor and indoor (greenhouse) operations that will sell premium quality for much higher price, and as always, there will be hobyists growing their own suply.

Along with every other product, people and companies will get greedy and pump out a poor quality product to increase profits. There will be a premium for "the good stuff". Prices for the street stuff will drop dramatically because people won't have to go to less favorable places to get it. The good stuff will probably drop in price a little but not drastic, and I'm sure medical grade prices will go up since it won't be shunned by the do gooders because it is legal.

That's long term pricing. At first there won't be enough to meet the demand so the prices will sky rocket.

Supply and demand.

The future is bleak. The big boys will have this plant figured out over night. Supply will soar even higher than demand driving prices down to commodity pricing. Big brands with compelling blends will rule this wasteland while knowledgeable growers work like dogs to earn a few scraps. Giant robot like combines will harvest fields of cantalope size buds and spit out perfectly trimmed buds on the right and beautiful hemp rope out the back, efficiently processing every bit of the miracle plant.

And then the old school growers will say fuck this, this is war. And war will commence. The old school growers now spend their time growing male plants to supply their pollen spreading drones with ammunition. And then...
