Growing in 20 gallon Self Watering Tote

Hi, my friend has 3 plants growing in a 20 gallon home made self watering tote.
My question is 3 plants in one container seems to be a lot. Will their roots get entangled? Should he be concerned about this and if not what would be the max you would put in a 20 gallon tote with about 7-8in of soil.

I would think he'll be OK, not optimal but OK, depending on how long he vegs for. Only problem is if one plant gets sick it could affect the others,if he needs to cut it down those roots could start to rot causing issues. Its not really a good idea to plant multiple plants in the same container, but it can be done just takes some more work.

Ok, so individual pots instead of one container. How big of a pot or container should he have for a single plant? He has a small walk-in closet with limited space. Thanks for your advice as my buddy is new at this so I'm just trying to help him out.

As big as he wants. How big does he want them to get/what can he fit in there? I'd say a 5 gallon would prob be best, or smaller. 3-5 gallon

Well he has a 6x4 closet with around 12 plants. So he wants them to get to a decent size to produce. He is looking for quality not really quantity.

quality all depends on how he takes care of his plants. what kind of light is he running? how tall is the closet? but yeah, id say 3-5 gallon would be his best bet.

3gal pots would give you more room to work, both vertically and around the plants, I'd go 5 gal, you could grow them bigger, vertical height would be your only real concern, bigger buckets give you more wiggle room on watering-it wont dry out as fast as a 3 gal. whats he running for lights? remember when you switch to flower the plants will stretch 2-3 times their height, so if you only have 36" of vertical space for the actual plant switch them to flower at about 12-14"tall. 12 36" plants in 5 gal buckets should give you a decent crop as long as everything else is ok.
