growing hydro? just a quick question

Hey, im thinking about growing some hydro but i really dont know where to start.... can i grow it outside if i want? and my friend told me all you do is get like a fish tank or something big... fill ti with water put dirt in and plant the seed.... is that how its really done. cause i have this big container thing... and im wanting to know if i can grow it in their and how?

First off there is no dirt in hydro.(water and nutes and air bubbles only)
