Hi I am about to begin my second grow and thought I should purchase all the proper equipment in order to get the best out of my babies. I recently purchased a grow kit which included all of the following

1x Secret Jardin DRstreet 80 Grow Tent (80cm D X 80cm W X 160cm H)

1x 250watt Maxibright Compact Ballast. (Not a cheap Chinese import!)

1x Hammer Tone Euro Reflector.

2x Easy Rollers. (Light Hangers)

1x 250w Philips Master Son-T Pia HPS.

1x 100mm 4" Vents 2 speed Extractor Fan. (187M3/h)

1x 2 Meters of Power Cable, UK Plug Included.

1x 100mm Carbon Filter. (160M3/h)

1x 3 Meter Flexi Ducting.

3x 100mm Ducting Clips.

Now I just have a few questions before I attempt to build my grow room. Does the extractor fan get placed in or outside my tent. Obviously i know that the ducting gets attached and fed out of my closet to get rid of excess heat, but not sure where exactly to mount extractor fan . Also I got a carbon filter with the kit and don't really have a clue how to set that up! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The carbon filter goes inside the tent. The exhaust fan out side the tent. Exhaust to outside if possible. What kind of setup are you using? Are you using dirt? Check my hydro journal, I just built my tent a few weeks ago.

I put my fan inside the tent. My setup goes like this:

carbon filter --> fan --> cool tube --> exhaust

Basically, the fan pulls air from the filter and pushes it thru the cool tube and out the exhaust. My thinking is that I'd rather have the fan blowing air into the tube rather than have warm air get sucked thru the fan, which could shorten the fan life. I have both mounted on top with zip ties. There is no smell, and it definitely keeps the temps down.

It probably doesn't matter. I didn't want the heat of the fan in the tent and I didn't want to waste that much space in the tent. Plus, the heat of the exhaust is only about 85-90 degrees. Im sure the fan will last longer than I will.

I intend to have a seperate cooling system for the light. That will be a straight pass-thru. The intake on the light will be ducted to the outside of the tent and so will the exhaust. A little fan to pull some air by it and cool it off is all I need. Then the big fan can be hooked up to the filter and to an environmental controller so it doesn't suck out all the Co2. That's the next stage though.

yes my extractor fan is inside my tent only for the ease of hanging it. Its a pain to try and hang it outside the tent when you can loop a small chain through the metal structure of the tent. you would put the filter on the inside of your tent or you could put the filter on the end of the ducting where you are venting the exhaust. one half dozen or the other. but it would be more efficient to have it directly attached to the fan, IMO.
hope that helped and good luck with your grow!

Thanks everyone for ur advice. I mounted the extractor outside the tent on a little shelf just above it. I have an exhaust pulling air from inside the tent going thru the fan and then another exhaust attachéd to the filter via the fan if that makes sense.

Like this :

exhaust - extractor fan - exhaust - carbon filter

both carbon filter and extractor fan are above my tent on a shelf with just an exhaust coming thru the hole in the top of my tent and is dangling just beside the light . Am I correct in thinking this will suck the hot air being given off by the light straight out of the tent? If there is a better way or I'm doing anything wrong please let me know .

Oh and I'm using Soil.

I had the same problem when i first set mine up..
I use the filter and my fan as an intake for the vegging process, filter on my windowsill bringin cold air in and fan on the floor of my grow room, when they start to show female flowers i will move it so that the filter is inside the tent and the fan taking air outside... An oscillating fan blowing on my bulb will keep the room cooler aslong as there is cold air coming in... i got the DR100 but the setup is almost the same... check out my sig man,

:peace:

Here's the thing: The charcoal filter is designed to SUCK air. That's why there is a "pre-filter" wrapped around the outside. This catches dirt and crap before it gets to the tiny charcoal pores for "air purification". The outside of the filter has a greater surface area so that the dirt gets stuck there and the air can still find its way around. As the air gets cleaned its funneled into a smaller area. If you reverse this, the dirt and crap hits the small inside diameter of the filter and quickly plugs up all the holes. The lifespan of the filter would be reduced by 40-50%.

I wrote that, then found this http://www.4hydroponics.com/FAQcanCombo.htm

Are you exhausting to fresh air? If not, you're just moving air around in the room and that won't provide enough "fresh" air to come in and make everything wonderful.

FYI: The pic of inside my tent looks like the filter is above the light, it's not in the way. I can lift the light all the way to the ceiling without interference. Also, the pic of the fan is old because I had to mount everything to the ceiling with rubber hooks. But it's in relatively the same spot.
