Grow medium?

I plan on making a RDWC SOG setup. Now, I've looked at different types of medium and I've narrowed it down to what I'd like to try.

1inch rockwool cubes put into 3 inch netpots with either:
Coco Croutons
STG Hail
Hydroton

I'm rather hesitant to use Hydroton because it breaks down and makes an utter mess. What about you guys? Have you tried the STG Hail? It looks nifty and the guys that make it seem to know their shit, I'm asking for an unbiased opinion on it though. What do you guys think of the three mediums and which would you suggest for a beginner? Which has the most neutral PH?

Yeah, my hydroton doesn't make a mess, just make sure you rinse the hell out of it before you plan on using it.

Any thoughts on Coco? Some people swear by it, I'm completely new so I have no opinion. So basically I'll be making my decision on grow medium based off this thread. =D

You guys ever mess with any of the STG mediums? http://www.suretogrow.com/stg-storm-hail-hydroponic-supplies-from-sure-to-grow
I'm doing a Coco grow this time around. I'm doing it on a ebb & flow table though. I wouldnt use the croutons I would use the coco chips by hydro farm, roots organics, or empire. I think the croutons would be too small. I recharge my coco chips with liquid karma and Cal/Mag so I dont have to add any cal mag back into my res. Make sure you rinse coco like you ould hydroton it has a lot of salts , and precharge for 24 hours.

Coco dan coco croutons are fine in dwc. They don't float, provide a place for micro-organisms to breed if you brew tea, and are somewhat re-usable. After you can't use them in dwc anymore, you can use them in soil. Another option, silica rocks. I just picked up some hydrolite from botanicare and am excited to try it out. I didn't know it was soaked in nutrient solution before I bought it, but on the bag it says it has all kinds of fertilizer added to it... maybe i should have gotten hygromite, which is what i think botanicare knocked off, but i would never want to try STG hail... sunleaves also makes a silica rock, but it's impossible to find.
