Grow Medium

I'm just wondering if anyone has tried anything off the wall and had success for a medium. I'm thinking things like lego's (small block ones). I'd like to make a top feed (have made tons of aero) system but am unwilling to pay the shipping (remote island in middle of nowhere) so I don't wanna hear how great hydroton or rockwool works. Prob the only thing in town is pearlite. A little old man suggested that I look into it..

I've had trouble with the rubbermade roughneck totes leaking (even with/without) weather stripping, I've made skirts and EVERYTHING. Finally had to glue the lid on with silicon now it should be fun to maintain all those sprayers :) Anyways any input on some crazy medium ideas would be GREAT!

I'm going to use beer cups for the net pots. I dunno why I didn't think about that before. They would be perfect.

Do you have pet stores near you, usually you can get clay pebbles, coco coir, coco chunks. You can try lava rock also.

Actually the closest thing we have is a fish store. I'm going to look into lava rock, an old man told me you could get it in town. I've never been to the fish store so I'm going to go look.

I'm actually a HUGE fan of aeroponic to tell you the truth. I just have a tiny 60gph pump and want to make a tote out off mostly home goods.

While I'm asking. Has anyone used pearlite? I'm thinking that in a top feed if it drained fast enough it wouldn't float and work fine.... I can get that... would it keep it moist for awhile? or at least on par to hydroton

I would start with 3-4 and see how that does, you can mix vermiculite in with it and wont have to water it as much.
