grow kit or not?

hello everyone

im 100% newbee here , i have been doing alot of research on starting my own little grow area.. like what and what not to do and i have a list of stuff i was gonna buy. then i ran into a place where they sell whole kits... just wondering if any one has bought one use one seen one ect. if there any good or junk and figured sense theres alot of pro growers here some one could help .. link below is something i ran into

you could grow from start to finish with that kit, the tent isn't that big so depending on how many plants you want to grow, i would go a little bigger, only other change or addition i would make is get an hps light for flower.

If you want to keep your plants small this will do, you could do better though.

Id use an HID light w/ an inline fan to cool it. If your going to use a tent/light combo Id go with this, add a better inline fan and youd be better off than the one you linked to, an it would cost less. http://www.htgsupply.com/Product-HTG-400w-Grow-Tent-Kit.asp


While LED's are nice HID is still more cost effective

Johnsondj84: no offense my friend but I think the price is too high for what you get. I've seen that with most of the kits. You can get a good grow tent 4' wide by 2' deep by 6'6" tall for a couple of hundred dollars.

I don't like to support the Edison company so I use a 4' rack of T-5's and that's only $140. CFL's and florescent lights burn cool enough so you won't likely need an extensive ventilation/cooling system. With HID you will.

You can duplicate Stealth Hydro's bubble tub at Walmart and The Home Depot for about $55 to $60 so you'll have a lot of cash left over when you're done. Think about how much beer that will buy? If you're not very handy with tools I'm sure you've got some friends who can get to help you. You might have to promise them a little of your first crop but where there's a will there's a way.

I'm sure that LED drives up the price a good bit, I've seen them alone for $600.

That kit doesn't have everything you need. I don't imagine you'd buy that kit and use miracle grow... add top-dollar soil, nutes, and combo meter and you're approaching $1k. I didn't see a carbon filter on that list either.

so basically i thinking i should stick with my original plan and buy each piece alone not in a kit !?!
Also i see some are not into LEDs but can led lighting do the trick ? maybe i could used the led below and maybe 2 small t5?

and the reason i tent to stay with possible led lighting is the extremely low heat and cost to runing is much cheaper .... i really dont want to cut a hole and run duck work to my attic i would like to keep my house in one peice... i have read alot about leds seem pretty much every ones 50/50 either you hate them or love them ...

man.... you're going to pay hundreds more for a setup that saves you a couple dollars a month? ...and 15 minutes of carpentry? Come back to earth

yea i know it will cost a bit more to setup up....but aslong as it works good and i dont have to change the setup down the road, then im ok with spending a bit more at start up

well what kind of an area u got to work with ? first of all.. because u could really set up a better system for less

with those lights.. u will be very disapointed. sorry LEDS unless u buy the 1000 dollar setups are not worth using in bud grows..

All you need is a set of hands man! You can build anything yourself, for a fraction of the commercial price. Not to mention the satisfaction of a hands on learning experience like that.

i was goona get a grow tent for my spare bedrom

ok so what would u suggest then. i can build just about anything i just figured it would be cheaper to by a tent like setup

...you've got to be careful where you spend good money. Every single vendor, every manufacturer, every product, will tell you that they know how to grow the best pot. And they'll sell you a water pump with some pvc for $400. I'm not judging anybody, I'd rather spend $100 on 4 bags of soil than mix my own for $20, I just don't want you to sacrifice in critical areas at the expense of somebody else's profit margin. If you've got the cash, buy 20 of them

I like to buy barebones and build it myself, but certain things I spend top dollar on. Lots of light, nutrients, soil, and combo meter to measure it all because I want the best results, but secondary variables such as airflow, lightproofing, wiring, carpentry, plumbing, etc are better customized than store-bought, IMHO.

If you have the tools and can build, id say build your own cabinet.

2x4's for the frame ( use a cross member to hang your light) you can either use plywood for walls or just wrap the frame with panda film. The money you save over buying a tent will pay for a good inline fan to cool an HID light. I have a Blackstar LED and a few HID lights, trust my first hand advice HID is still the way to go......not saying that LED isnt good,, just that HID is a lot lighter on the wallet for the same amount of lumens.

Id also stay away from the kits, seems like some wasted $......, and if your just starting our growing my biggest advice is for the first couple grows keep it simple. Good light, good soil, good air movement and good (not super expensive overhyped crap) nutes are all you need to get going.

ok im thinking i should make my own and give up the idea of leds. and yes im just starting trying to do all my reasearch before i do anything i figured if im gonna do it its gonna be done right .. i have plenty of room 2 empy spare bedrooms and or a full garage to build it..
do you have any good advice on a good HID light and good air moment im thinking a 400 or 600 would pry do the trick im not gonna make anything huge maybe a 5x5 or 6x6
