IMO, oldtimers are set in their ways, But a good grower knows the majority of critical root zone is 1-2'' under the top. This is why in my soil I add an extra inch of hydrotone rock to the top to protect my feeder roots from drying out quicker.

Ahhh my guru has that, a load of clay pebbles on top. I didn't ask,(he offers advice, lol) thought it might be to make em pretty . . . . lmao . . .

Yes it makes sense, keep the top inch of soil dark and moister for longer, roots will grow. Have you had any experience with fungus gnats? Do you think clay plebs would piss them off enough to get lost, along with some GnatNix perhaps???

Nice 1 . . . .

I like natural remedies. Sticky traps help too though, Id try the hydrogen peroxide followed my an insecticidal soap. Its all about that IPM, get the larve and the adults will be no more.

You got it and understand much. The microbial nuances aren't so important.
Continuous moisture is a good thing I think...here's my blumat-powered 16oz party cup plant. 46 grams dry:

now that's fuckin impressive man.
How did you feed it?
Must have been hydro right? there's no room for any soil in there!
46 grams out of a party cup.
WOW.
My fucking girl scout cookie will get me less than 46 grams, for sure, and that bitch is in a 7 gallon.
Course we all know the girl scout is one of the shittiest yielders known to mankind.
But mannn is the smoke good.

some have good luck getting the large size panty hose, to cover the container, keeps the gnats OUT... or IN depending...
that's the trick there...
Its more for preventative measures rather than getting rid of them.

thanks man:) Well, it was a soil grow with a blumat tropf watering system. I fed synthetic nutes through the blumat with every drop. She flowered for slightly under 60 days under 13on/11off + 5 mins 730nm light at the end of lights on.
