Going from CFL's to LED'S

I'm an outdoor grower of 35 years and I like growing outdoors. It's effective and doesn't require the attention that artificial lighting does. That being said it's a long cold winter so for a few years I have done just fine in a 4x4x2 ft box loaded with goosenecks and splitters. I end up using four of the highest wattage daylight 6500 lumen bulbs per plant and 2700 soft white bulbs for flowers. Just using four 2.5 gallon buckets in my little box I can pull an average on just over a zip in 12 to 14 weeks with quite a bit of LST and a pinch here and there.
Well I think I want to upgrade to a 4ft wide x 8ft long x5 ft tall box. I really don't want to deal with a high Def MH and HPS setup that'll possibly require cooling, heating etc that I don't want.
The swami at the store was pushing me pretty hard to spring for the Johnson Lighting CX9 (?). Im willing to drop the money on it but am concerned the effective foot print is smaller than I want. Are their better LED options out there that do the same or more for less of an upfront investment? Would a light rail increase my foot print without sacrificing light intensity and is a box with a height of 5ft tall enough to avoid scalding or bleaching. Sorry for the long winded post but these days a MH/HPS can be had for shorter money than the CX9 so I could really use some advice.

big benefit of leds is they are efficient in small packages (unlike hps) - in fact- the softer you run them the more efficient they are. so most people dont use movers with them, they just build arrays.

if you want an easy cheap venture into leds go drop $50 on 10 15W led bulbs, pop off the plastic diffusers and replace a portion of your CFL garden. when you see what 30% more lumens/watt can do you will be sold.. and you will want the johnson so you can be at 50-70% more lumens/watt

Or instead of buying a Johnson for ridiculous price upping, there's many other companies. Www.Ecosunlite.com is one of the cheapest and is good quality.

I'm going to dive right in but it's 1k for the CX9 the guy is pushing and I wouldn't mind spending less.
Can I just multiply units and wattage to end up with 1000 watts? IE.. does four 250 watt light add up to 1000 watts or does it mean I have four 25 watt units if that makes sense. TY.

Seeing that you run outdoor in the summer, how cold does your grow room get in your "long winter"?..........you may benefit from the heat off of HID/ run lights at night/simple & cheap exhaust system is all you may need.....

Dude, 1000$ can get you so much more if you build a Cob setup. Also, the cx-9 is kind of more for a 4x4 (?) space..

If I were you I'd buy something like 2x http://timbergrowlights.com/250-watt-cree-cxb3590-5-cob-grow-light-kit/ (Doesn't have to be from here, or a kit even, just the general setup)

That way you could build a frame and setup that covers your entire area better.

@Airwalker16 is right. If you want a low price Ecosunlite works just great.

I'm going to check out Eco Sun and Timber grow. I have no choice in regards to my width of 4 ft and a height of 5 ft but I can go a couple feet longer. The Swami's solution was to buy two CX9's to get the most out of my space. That's 2k right out of the gate. I'm in a boiler room that probably has an average temp of 60 degrees but I can pull enough cold fresh air in so I can control overheating pretty easily and I have a very small box heater that I set to turn on for short periods of time during blackout. It takes a little tweaking but I expect I can keep the space at a consistent temp. Thanks for the heads up folks. I'm a master gardener so I understand plants and what they require. I also propagate hemeracallis and Hosts and expect to name a day lily in the next couple years if the plants maintain the traits I've been breeding in. The guys at two hydro stores I checked out were hell bent on convincing me that cannabis was a particularly difficult to grow. It's not and spending the kind of money the industry demands is whacked. I honestly have more difficulty raising good eggplant and thick walled bells than cannabis. Damm flea bestles. Thanks guys. Any good books out there specific to LED's
