Azamax works very good. I would do a soil drench with it. I would also put sand on the top of your grow medium as the gnats can't get through it to lay eggs. Just don't use sand if you recirculate your water. Azamax is great.. Do you have alge growing on the top of your medium? Also, make sure you can get good air flow down at the bottom of your plants. Use the blue sticky traps to monitor their population. after the Azamax, put the traps up and then leave them for a week - 10 days. Hit it again with Azamax and put up new traps and compare their populations after a week each.. Just don't let them get out of control so get on them early..

Had the same problem recently. I did the following and it eliminated the gnat problem.

1) Fly trap strips
2) Bowl of water with some drops of dish soap - causes them to drown.
3) Re-potted plants with new soil
4) Pesticide
