You can't. they're a complete nightmare. They lay their eggs in the soil and the babies eat your roots.

It's too cold up my way for gnats BB:mrgreen:... you poor southerners. lol.

What I used before is those yellow sticky things. Because of the fans (they don't like wind) they'll hide at the base of the plants. so place some on top of the soil too.

Do you keep your fans on during lights out? This will help keep the numbers down too, as like i said, they don't like windy conditions.

Dishes of some sugary substance and water and sticky fly strips helps to control them to such a number that they will be not be very harmful to your plants:blsmoke:

Sorry about the lol, BB... didn't mean it in a nasty way. You want to see what I'm going through right now... thrips mate. Yeah, you heard right... thrips. I got an infestation. My plants are growing sweet still... just the thrips are sucking my leaves dry. They itchy mo' fo's too.

Keep your fan on all the time. When the fan aint on the gnats all fly about having sex and producing babies. To control their numbers you want to stop them flying around. Also hang those yellow strips underneath the plants too, as when the wind is blowing this is where the little fuckers (excuse my french) hide out.

gnats get in and lay eggs the larvie are worms. catching the adults only helps to stop laying eggs.

i use GNATROL to rid myself of these pests

See www.dirtdoctor.com. (Library-Gnats) I checked it for you. Compost/soil, too moist. Let it dry more between watering, drench soil in Neem oil. Put a little apple juice or apple cider in mason jar, cover with plastic & secure with rubber band. Poke small hole in plastic... they go in, can't get out. But more info at the site.
