To keep gnats away put sand on top of the dirt. The adults
lay eggs in the dirt When they hatch they cannot get throungh the 1/4 inch of sand... Still looking for other remidies, they are trying to lay eggs in my aerogarden sponges as we type. Don't get paid untill tomorrow, and would rather spend my money on more lights :hump: Peace

Would the sand have any effect on the soil/plant? You figure you will have to water the plant and the sand will eventually seep down into the soil to where the roots are. Would this harm the plant at all??

Shouldn't, all sand does is works like perlite... Makes better drainage... I don't claim to know it all, so if it don't work tell me please. Peace

Preventing an Infestation

Instructions

  • STEP 1: Select healthy, bug-free plants for your home.
  • STEP 2: Repot indoor plants in sterile potting soil if you suspect a problem.
  • STEP 3: Allow the soil to dry between watering - gnats thrive in a warm moist environment.
  • STEP 4: Remove any diseased or rotting roots.
Ousting the Bugs

Instructions

  • STEP 1: Put 1 tsp. of apple cider vinegar, fruit juice or wine in a small bowl of water near infested plants to trap and drown adult gnats.
  • STEP 2: Tempt adults to lay eggs away from plants by putting sprouting wheat grains in a container next to the plants. Bury or burn egg-laden sprouts after a few days and repeat until laying cycle is broken (8-20 days).
  • STEP 3: Remove 1/4 inch of topsoil and replace with diatomaceous earth (the skeletal remains of marine algae) to kill the soft-bodied larvae.
  • STEP 4: Use yellow sticky traps to lure and capture the gnats.

Can't I just put metal screen all around my plants and use a electric fence charger on it? lol, that was a joke. although it might keep the cats away better... hehe
