GlassJoe's Outdo' Gro' Summer 2021

Howdy, I decided to separate the thread for my spring grow that's finishing up in a tent from my outdoor grow which is going to run through August/September. The genetics I'm starting with:
  • Humboldt Seed Company, (photo, fem)
    • 1x Magic Melon
    • 1x Caramel Cream
    • 1x Blueberry Muffin
    • 2x Hi-Biscus
  • ILGM, (photo, fem, I gave them another shot and plan to use them as test subjects for an outdoor manifold)
    • 2x Girl Scout Cookies Extreme,
  • Mephisto Genetics, (auto, fem)
    • 1x Ripley's OG
    • 1x Super Orange Haze
    • 1x Forum Stomper x Samsquanch OG F1
    • 1x Mango Smile x Skywalker F1 ("Mango Sky")
    • 1x Hubbabubbahaze (this one will be leaving the grow soon as a gift)
The Autos were soaked in water overnight and transferred to damp paper towels with film over the plates. They were then planted in Royal Gold Tupur in 4-inch pots, which is a soilless mix of Coco Coir, "aged forest materials", Perlite, basalt.

The photos were germinated similarly, planted in 4-inch pots in I believe Fox Farms Ocean Forest, replanted into gallon pots in the same media, and when they were moved to 10-gallon fabric pots, I used a soil mix that I mixed up in large trash cans for this purpose. I ended up with a bag of Sunshine Mix #4, which I had never used before, but had seen for sale and done some research on. I know it has issues with low pH, and in general I don't like using peat moss for environmental reasons, so this will be my first and last grow in it, but I wanted to use it up. The mix consisted of Sunshine Mix #4, Garden Lime for pH adjustment, compost, worm castings, mycorrhizal inoculant granules, and One Shot from Nectar for the Gods, which is a prilled dry soil amendment made from Feather Meal, Alfalfa Meal, Kelp Extract, Limestone, Azomyte, Alfalfa, Soybean Meal, Worm Castings, Humic Acid, "organic iron", which I assume is some kind of milorganite-type thing, some copper, and calcium lignin according to the video where they're weighing out the materials and mixing it.

My plan is to grow the photos entirely outdoors all summer and use the extremely long veg period to try out training techniques (repeated topping and both low and high stress training) to keep them from getting too tall. The plants in 10 gallon bags are going to go into the ground, lined by compost. the plants in 5-gallon pots are going to go into 15-gallon pots. Both Hi-Biscus, the Blueberry Muffin, and the Caramel Cream have been topped. The Magic Melon will be topped soon when it develops a little more. The GSCE are between nodes #5 & 6 and I'm waiting for a little more development before topping them down to node #3 for the manifold.

The Autos are going to go into 5-gallon pots, and I'll move them between the tent and outside to maximize their light when the tent frees up in a couple of weeks.

So, long story short: despite being planted at the same time as in previous years, some of our plants started flowering early, so we leaned into it and flowered them out. One gsce was very stunted because it started flowering right after it had been cut for training, and I tossed it because it had so few flowering sites. I already had cuts taken from the plants, so I will get a do-over. But today was chop day for some stuff. First was the girl scout cookie extreme that had more going for it. It became a nice manifold and the nugs see nice and dense and sticky.
PXL_20210605_162704392.jpg
Then the super orange haze auto, also nice and dense, does have a bit of that hazy fruity smell but not that pronounced outdoors
PXL_20210605_154103989.PORTRAIT.jpg
The forum stomper x samsquanch og f1 auto also bulked up nicely and I'm looking forward to it.
PXL_20210605_154039881.PORTRAIT.jpg
The mango smile x Skywalker F1 auto has a delectable smell, sweet and fruity, with tight sticky nugs and it even threw some nice trichomes on the sugar leaves. It's probably the one I'm most looking forward to.

The Ripley's OG didn't get as dense as the others, but it put on plenty of weight. It has quite a piney, kushy aroma and the buds are sticky with appropriately colored resin under a jewelers loupe, but I'm sure it probably needs 20+ hrs of light to bulk fully.

I know I left some potential untapped with the autos by not giving them more light than they get outdoors, but I'm still very satisfied with the results so far.

So, here are a couple shots of the plants I have in veg: the Jelly Ranchers are both from seed, one earlier than the other. They're about 23 inches tall and 29 inches tall respectively, and they're at about their 12th+ and 15th+ nodes! Very tight internodal spacing.

I've done some defoliation to expose the inner sites to direct sunlight, leaving the lower and outer fans and so far it has done well.

I also have a garlic Budder and blueberry muffin in the ground under Scrog and I'm training them sideways to fill in a 5x5 area. The garlic Budder is from seed, the muffin is a clone of another one from seed I have in a light deprivation tent. Once they're filled in, I'll let them go vertically and just hope they don't get too large in the next two months.

So my plants have started to transition to flowering. First up the Jelly rancher: the two plants from seed in the previous post are both in 10-gallon bags (one already was) but they're both in the ground. The bigger of the two JR in the previous pic is the plant in the back. On the left is a cut of it that has been topped once, on the right is a cut that has not been topped, and up front is an apple blossom from seed. In the future I would almost always top Jelly Rancher having seen the way it grows, just because it is a plant that does not like to spread out and the stems feel relatively strong.

Here's a closeup of JR#1 in the back up close to show the transition.

Here is the cloned JR that is next to it on the right in the photo
JR #1 cut #2 w0.jpg

And the clone of it on the left that's been topped once:
JR #1 cut #3 w0.jpg

The other plant in the photo from the previous post I'll call JR#2, and it was moved due to space concerns. It's a little more spread out than JR#1, but I believe JR#1 spent too long in its pot above ground and it needed to be transplanted earlier or topped earlier in life.

JR #2 w0.jpg

The plant behind it is a cloned Garlic Budder:

And there's one more cut of the JR #1 in the ground in a 10-gallon bag, also not topped:

The Garlic Budder and Blueberry Muffin under the SCROG from my previous post have taken off massively, and are also transitioning to flower. The Garlic Budder is extremely vigorous, it's an absolute freak of a plant (in a good way). And here's a shot of the Garlic Budder, spreading out (it's a little over 5 feet tall) :

Here's a shot of it close-up showing it transitioning to flower:

Here's the Blueberry Muffin (a clone of a previously grown plant).
BBM w0.jpg

The trunks on these plants have grown nice and thick in the time they've spent in the ground:
GB & BBM Trunk.jpg

And here's the apple blossom from seed in the ground. It was damaged as a seedling, and now has this weird grown pattern where instead of having two opposing shoots at each node 180 degrees apart from each other, it has three shoots at each node 120 degrees from each other.

Looking real healthy ! Cant wait to see your trees in a few weeks. Have you looked at HSC vids? The recent ones show quite a few B muffins that are 15-20' tall. :joint:

I don't think I've seen the specific vid you're talking about, but I follow HSC on instagram and they're always reposting pictures from farms. I totally believe the BBM makes it to that size.

The JR#1 and Garlic Budder seeds were germinated at the beginning of April (something like the 04/09/21), and the Blueberry Muffin was cut from its mom on 05/08/21. For someone who germinates indoors in February/March and transitions to outdoor growing, 4-5 months of veg seems like enough to turn these things into redwoods.

When you have plants like those, make some clones for indoors.

The best clones I have are often from outdoors plants in the summer.

Have a great Sunday...

Thanks for the tip and the kind wishes! In the future I will cut clones for the winter, but my plants outdoors are flowering and it's a bit too late for this one. My plan for the winter is almost the opposite, I'm going to run some S1's in a tent and see if there's anything worth bringing outside for the summer. I do agree with your process, though; so winter 2022 I'll definitely try to be running my best cuts from summer 2022.

It rained yesterday, and I had a branch on the garlic Budder break! It was sagging when I got home and later that evening it had broken, so I put the two halves back in contact, tied them together, and misted the site to keep it wet until it can callus, like a graft.

The leaves and buds on that branch are just like normal, so it seems like it's recovering from the trauma.

The Garlic Budder that had the broken branch is doing just fine, like it never happened. In other Garlic Budder news, the clone of it that I'm growing has some of the crazy vigor of its mom.

I took the cutting on 05/08, transplanted to a 4-inch pot on 05/18, and transplanted from a 4-inch pot to a 2-gallon grow bag on 06/04.

I put that plant in the ground around the beginning of July, and it has absolutely taken off; it's almost 4.5 feet tall now!

Everything is chugging along, some further into flowers than others. Jelly Rancher #1 from seed and Garlic Budder from seed are showing the most floral development so far. I used tomato cages to spread out Jelly #1 and it has responded well. The Apple Blossom has been undergoing transition the last week or so, and was probably not fully beginning to flower until around this weekend.

Here's everything chugging along happily; with the early start to flower I'm calling this ~week 3 of flower or so. Here's the 3 Jellies and the apple blossom, which clearly took longer to go into flower and is now the largest of the four in that area:

I did a bit of defoliation as well, here are the two beside the greenhouse, the Jelly rancher up front and the garlic Budder clone in the back.

Here's a closer shot of the garlic Budder, which has stretched out something fierce. Strong sativa growth pattern.

Looking good! Is the b muffin directly in ground? Those are stacking up nicely, Doink! :weed:

Thanks! The muffin is in a 10-gallon fabric pot, and once it gets big enough to put in the ground, I just put the whole pot in the ground and the roots grow through the bag.

The lip of the pot sticks up above the ground and acts as a berm to help with watering, and I surround the bag with high-porosity mix with dry soil amendments.

Here's a picture of it from June 7th around when I put it into the ground, it's the one in the top left:
